It's quite amazing how many serves you can get out of a cake. I did and 8"&6" two tier cake for my Aunt and Uncle to celebrate their wedding anniversary and we got over 100 coffee sized slices with half a cake to spare. The fashion is to have quite tall tiers these days, so the cake is higher and you get more serves.
