Ripping DVDs - Advice Plz

The ƒlint ƒamily is tired of DVDs taking up physical space in our home.
*We need that space for Legos.

Back in 2010 I had ripped my entire music collection using Windows Media Player.

Pros:
  • Automatically rip when disc inserted, eject disc when complete.
  • Configurable rules for naming convention, destination folder, file format.

Cons:
  • None. This was a very easy, smooth process.

How do I do this for DVDs?

Can I use Windows Media Player (like the features, not sure of file formats)?
Can I use VLC (does it have comparable, auto features and configurability)?
Is there some other, * FREE * application which does the task (also smooth, easy)?
Could I pay * a little money * for some super-duper thing which knocks this task out of the park?

Thank you in advance for your help...

Trading opportunities had occurred in the past project.
