As we patiently await better images from the Mars Odyssey, here is one of the first: a thermal infrared image that tells you how cold it is on the surface. And it's cold. You may think you're cold where you are but on Mars it's bloody freezing.

Actually, looks reasonably warm on the day side. Just off the ice cap, it's already near 0 C (32 F). Granted, it is summer on the hemisphere we're looking at, but still, that's pretty warm.
Martian nights are a bitch, though!
