Here's a picture I took a few years ago in California.

Just beyond the railing is about a foot of grass, then a long drop to the ocean.

The sign next to the boy says:

DO NOT CLIMB

SET A POSITIVE EXAMPLE
DON'T EVEN TRY IT

The parent's weren't paying any attention.
