July 2, 2012 [b] - Maldives

What is a maldive? Well, it is a place, not a thing. Did you know that? I sure didn't. Never heard of the place until today.

Here is a great aerial shot:

The problem with this interesting place is that it may, no will, soon be under water. You see, it is the lowest-lying country on Earth and with the sea level rising . . . well, you see where that is going . . .

Thanks to National Geographic and photographer Ibrahim Muneez for this insightful piece.

Been there, been there.
Well, okay, not really. The Maldives are a popular tourist destination here, especially for honeymoons, but I could not afford it myself.

However I went to Sri Lanka which is close enough to act as a twin-centre holiday destination.

How did they survive this long? Don't they have storms in the Indian Ocean, don't they have any storm driven surf... ever?

Wikipedia says:
Quote:
With an average ground level of 1.5 metres (4*ft*11*in) above
sea level, it is the planet's lowest country.[11] It is also the country
with the lowest natural highest point in the world, at 2.4 metres (7*ft*10*in)
A few Muldavians are very tall and have very long toenails.
When storms come, they dig them into the coral.
All the other Muldavians hold onto them for dear life.

And in a few thousand years, people will be talking about the mythical lost city of Maldives.

Well, a bit of sea level rise would put out those fires down the end of the island there.
