Here is a German fellow who is on another forum who thinks differently than others. Instead of the rotor around the axle he makes his following the rim.

I have a really novel idea. Instead of having a rotor at all, why not just grab the rim directly with the calipers?

like on pedally bikes? brakes on the road get really hot and it would mess up the tire, I expect

Sure, because they are so small, diameter wise. If you increase the size to be the rim of the wheel, the diameter is so large, that heat is spread out over an area 4 times larger, and the temperature is only 100 degrees. Not to mention the actual mass of the wheel rim. Oh, wait, I guess I just mentioned it.
To be fair, I was just joking. And I was visualizing a pedal powered bike, where we have gone from backpedaling to brake, to grabbing the rims, to grabbing a disk, and now here with the motorcycle, they are heading back in the direction of the rim again. And I hear mom jeans are back in style. |

It would have great heat dissipation but the thing would be heavy, maybe heavy enough to act like gyroscope and resist turning.

Forgive me, I spoke out of my ass.
Again. For some reason, I was thinking that was a bicycle rim. I think it was Glatt's comment (#319) what helped get me sideways. I've even seen murdersikkel rims set up like that one, and I still thought bicycle rim.

There isn't a tire installed yet and he has another bike with the same setup he has been riding for awhile. I had a pic of the other bike somewhere, but lets just say the Germans have an odd definition of what is beautiful. It is like they go out of their way to create ugly motorcycles.

People talk about German engineering like it's a good thing. I have my doubts.

The beauty of German Engineering is they are willing to try ideas like this and determine for sure whether it will work or not. Just don't buy any unfinished experiments.
