I've had so many people take me for being in my late 40s - early 50s that it's become annoying. People in their mid-fifties saying to me things like Wait 'til you become my age when complaining about some difficulty they're having. The gal who cuts my hair was actually astonished when I told her my age. My dentist double checked my age with me because he thought my actual age was an error in my chart. At work I was poking some fun at a cow-orker's age while discussing said cow-orker with his thirty something manager. The manager didn't seem to appreciate the humor; until, I explained that I was the same age. Then he laughed and said I never would have thought that. So, I can't even tell age related jokes about people my own age without others thinking I'm being politically incorrect.

Maybe I should've been an old soul instead of young at heart to balance things out. It would've made it easier to attain my calling in life to become a dirty old man.

That's because you're physically fit, and have always had to be to do your job.

When I was 20 I thought 40 was crazy old.

Now, I think old starts around 80, and at the rate my life has seemed to pass I figure I'll be turning 80 a month a go.

See, now I didn't. Even when I was much younger, 'old' to me conjured a picture of someone with white hair, a walking stick and a lapdog. Or variations thereof.

When I was 17 I had the hots for an older guy I used to see in a cafe I went to regularly. I think he was probably in his late 30s/early 40s.

In many of the places I have worked, and certainly during my time as a councillor, I engaged with colleagues in their 60s and even early 70s and there was nothing old about them.

I think it's a state of mind - and also health I guess - setting aside obvious stuff like dementia or crippling arthritis, I think it is as much about what someone projects, which is in itself about how they perceive themselves.

I have known people in their late 50s who have seemed old. Everything about them - their style of dress, the music they like, their attitude to technology and their engagement with the world. At the same time I know people in their 60s and 70s who are vibrant and project a much younger self. I find it hard, mentally, to attach the word 'old' to them.

Bean is no longer quite so little -- she's four and a half now and a crazy ball of energy and questions!

But you were gone long enough to notice.

I know, because you were gone.

And I noticed.
