Red meat probably not bad for you after all

NY Times Science section today:

Quote:
Eat Less Red Meat, Scientists Said. Now Some Believe That Was Bad Advice

Public health officials for years have urged Americans to limit consumption of red meat and processed meats because of concerns that these foods are linked to heart disease, cancer and other ills.

But on Monday, in a remarkable turnabout, an international collaboration of researchers produced a series of analyses concluding that the advice, a bedrock of almost all dietary guidelines, is not backed by good scientific evidence.

If there are health benefits from eating less beef and pork, they are small, the researchers concluded. Indeed, the advantages are so faint that they can be discerned only when looking at large populations, the scientists said, and are not sufficient to tell individuals to change their meat-eating habits.

"The certainty of evidence for these risk reductions was low to very low," said Bradley Johnston, an epidemiologist at Dalhousie University in Canada and leader of the group publishing the new research in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

My understanding is there is only three sources of energy for the human machine: aerobic (which constantly requires fresh oxygen), anaerobic (doesn't require oxygen, but produces lactic acid as byproduct), and directly synthesizing ATP from creatine stored in the muscles (a "free" transaction with no drawbacks).

Your body can create ceatine from amino acids, OR you can consume creatine from the muscles of other organisms-- mostly RED MEAT.

Which means-- when you eat read meat you literally *absorb the strength* of the animal you're eating.

Red meat, I believe the opponents claim damage to the environment has eclipsed any negative health claims.

I'm not so sure about processed meats being healthy, liverwurst, bologna, salami, and sausage have lots of stuff besides meat in them. And no question about killer bacon.

red meat is good for me.

Type O blood: A high-protein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables, and light on grains, beans, and dairy.

unfortunately, beer is not good for me.

I've been eating primarily meat and fat for 5 months now, and I've lost 60 lbs. NO bread, sugar or starches. Eggs and bacon and sausage and steak and chicken. Salads and dark green vegetables, cheese, and lots of Chicharones.

This is untrue. You are working to improve your physical health which in commendable, but you must not neglect your mental health while you're at it.
That's like concentrating on repairing the driveway and neglecting the lawn.

I'd suggest that like most of us Jim does not spend his day building pyramids or engaging in epic shield wall battles, he likely already has a method of taking the edge off.

Even eating carrots can be bad for you. Eat one carrot to obtain an entire daily requirement of Vitamin A. Eat a second carrot to have excessive Vitamin A (unhealthy). And excessive sugar.

It was never about good and bad - as extremists preach. It was always about a little of everything. Since the healthiest diet was always about everything is specific amounts - moderation. Too much or too little was always bad. (Just another example of why moderates are also more intelligent.)

What is one indication of a famine? Obesity. Too much of some and too little of others was always an unhealthy diet. Unhealthy was when Akin's, et al were preaching myths.
