CouldN'T care less....couldN'T.

One of my pet hates ....is the whole 'I could care less' instead of 'I couldn't care less'. So I was quite amused by this particular rant of David Mitchell's:

I had always hoped the speaker was being sarcastic or ironical, or even sarcastical when they said "I could care less"

But I suspect it is the result of people hearing the speaker roll over the ending of couldn't so it comes out sounding COULDn't and then, because they are illiterate or just American, they assume what they heard was correct because they always hear everyone saying, ignoring that they are the common denominator and that they tend to hang out with their peers, who likewise make the same assumptions.
Maybe.

Ah but... we're not entirely rational ourselves.
Cheap at half the price? Yes, it would have been.

The term was originally used sarcastically, to mean something was expensive or bad value for money.
But now it's used by people thinking they've got a good price.
"Cheap at half the price!" they say, satisfied with their purchase.

Fools.

Really? Cheap at half the price isn't so common here that I've heard it misused--yet. But then we're really only just getting the hang of "Too clever by half."

He's quite funny. I looked him up on youtube. There's some great bits from some tv show "Would I Lie to You?".

Doesn't seem to be available on dvd so I can't get it on netflix.
