You ever stick your finger in a cats mouth like when giving a pill? All soft inside. I imagine the tongue quills fold down inside the mouth. Anyone know for sure?

Found in my Dad's desk.

The circle in the center turns/rotates.
The angles on the bottom corners are 75 and 68 degrees.

That's a really cool item. I googled it and the proper term for it is "Ames Guide". It's for calligraphy and drafting and art - here's a video explaining it

Carved out of ivory?

Occasionally, similarly carved ivory objects turn up on the Antiques Roadshow which explains my line of thought.

Probably missed by a country mile.

I'd say that coral might be close enough but those little critters have got to be chalk or some other powdery fossilised rock. No?
