The official caption: Eleven-month-old Lokman Hakim Mondol, who weighs 22 kilograms (48 pounds) is brought at a hospital by his grandfather Tabarak Mullick, in Calcutta, India, Monday May 9, 2005. His mother, Jnanera Bibi, tries to cool him with a hand fan. Lokman consumes 5 liters of milk and 1 kilogram of rice-flour every day and is suspected to be suffering from a rare hormonal disorder.

But what's really telling here is the expression on the gent's face. Already responsible for a brood and now here he is having to help out again. And what's not said here - if this toddler eats five times what's normal, he also produces five times the usual amount of diaper output.

I wonder what will become of the lad.

Do they have an equivalent to Maury Povich in India? He does an oversized toddler show every now and again.

the thong diaper is all the rage now. it doesn't absorb much, but the kids love to let it show above the tops of their little pants.

I suspect he'll die in a few years when his heart can't handle his size anymore. Even if he weren't overweight, his body is already the size of a three-year-old.

Yeah, Maury was always having overweight kids on his show, wasn't he?

Why are these people feeding the kid so much? I don't get it. With so many kids (and adults) going hungry in India you'd think they could share the wealth a little. And the diiaper situation has got to be a bear to say the least. Eeeew.

Whats the thing on the kids head, between his eyes? Is it a good luck thing? I thought only the women did the dot on the forehead thing.

My 3 year old only weighs about 30 lbs. And he is pretty normal size for kids that age

Sure, of course he's also fatter than the average 3-year-old. I was just looking at arm, leg and torso length--supposedly this kid's only 11 months. Basically I was saying he's not just fat, he's got other overgrowth problems.

So he's suffering from a rare hormonal disorder called 'getting fed 5 liters of milk and a kilo of rice flour every day'...?? strange hormonal disorder, that one.

Or is it that he somehow MUST consume that? I mean, anyone who's ever had a cat or a dog (or heck, anyoen who's ever been a kid themselves) knows that what creature *will* eat if given the chance is very different from what he/she/it requires. I wish there were some extra info on what the child's health problem is (besides overabundance of food, which is what it sorta sounds like).

Just curious.

I think that's more to case here. His skeleton is growing, he's not just packing on fat.

I don't think that's so much the case with babies. Infants eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. It isn't until kids start to get a little older that they learn to over-eat.

Discovery Health Channel happened to have something about this on last night. It was about this kid in England who is 2 years old and weighs 84 pounds. He's actually been diagnosed with an extremely rare over-growth disorder--I think they said there's only 40 cases known worldwide (called MOMO(?) syndrome). The mother went to Brazil to meet a 17-year old girl who has the same syndrome. Poor thing, she wasn't super big, but the over-growth thing lead to a weird ridge on her forehead and eyes really far apart. I don't know if this is the case w/ the kid in the picture here--it sounds like they're just feeding him too much. Anyway, really interesting story if you get a chance to see it.

Its amazing to me how people can judge other people dealing with something. absolutely amazing! Clearly this child has a disability.. the family is probably struggling with this special needs child and people are commenting on how much she is feeding this infant. i work with infants... YOU COULD NOT.. EVEN IF U TRIED.. GET A NORMAL INFANT TO CONSUME THE AMT OF CALORIES IT WOULD TAKE TO MAKE AN 11 MTH OLD THIS BIG. Cleary this child is suffering from momo or some other syndrome to allow it to grow in this manner. Lets be sensitive to other's suffering and stop talking about matters we know nothing about!

If you read the thread, you will see only one person said this was the result of overfeeding. That individual also made a second post, saying he/she had discovered MOMO syndrome, and came back to share that information.
So you see, it's your fault, for not being here sooner to tell us about MOMO syndrome.

Oh, and if we don't discuss things we know nothing about, how will we learn anything new?
