9/15/2004: Freaky transit tunnel

This is Shanghai's Bund Tunnel under the Huangpu River. The city illuminated the tunnel in preparation for its National Day celebration on Oct. 1.

Well, you can never be too prepared.

More like the 1970's and (from what I have heard) an acid trip.

For a look at Shanghai kitsch at its worst, you can take a trip across the Huangpu in plastic, capsular cars. The accompanying light show is part Disney, part psychedelia, complete with flashing strobes, blowing tinsel, and swirling hallucinogenic images projected on the concrete walls. The tackiest futuristic film of the 1960s couldn't have topped this. The five-minute ride will have your head spinning and you wondering if the Chinese central government isn't giving Shanghai just a little too much money. COST: Y20 one-way, Y30 round-trip.-Fodors
I don't if Fodors are snobs or spoilsports, but they don't seem to like the tunnel.

That's similar to the tunnel in Frankfurt International Airport, it goes underground (under the runways) from one terminal to another, with an electric walk way for the lazy people. I was most impressed. It was difficult to understand the signs, so leave plenty of time between flights, believe me.

I was there in December last year, I stood at one end and took a photo of the tunnel, I had never seen anything like it before, it just went for miles. I can remember the segregated area's for smokers in the airport, they all just stood around a pole with ash trays attached to them. Most airports these days you are not allowed to smoke.

Hehehehe...

Round the world and home again
That's the sailor's way
Faster faster, faster faster

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing
