Good Tech

I rarely leave the house anymore without my hearing aides in. I've noticed that I'm much more easily irritated when I can't hear what people are saying to me. These things have been a blessing. Last night when I locked up the chickens the birdsong was tremendous. That is all.

Good for you! I say this in all sincerity--so many people's lives are needlessly bogged down by their refusal to use hearing aids for the stupid reason that it feels like something only "old" people need. But 1.) tons of barely-middle-aged people need them, and 2.) they actually prevent further hearing loss. If you wait until you're 65 and nearly deaf, even hearing aids can't bring back the auditory neurons in your brain that gave up after not getting a signal for years on end.

Everyone should periodically get their hearing checked after the age of 45. Good for you for embracing the tech!

Do you have replaceable domes that go in the ear canal? Mine are available through Amazon.

So many are marketed only through advertising. That means plenty of hype and few facts. Which ones have you tried? Which ones are better or worse? And why?

It is likely Fargon doesn't get a choice, since he's working with the VA.

Mine are Oticons which are the only brand I've tried on my audiologfists recommendation. The domes come in different sizes to assure a good fit, there is also a plastic anchor which fits inside the ear to prevent loss.

What hearing aids are available through the VA?

The Veteran's Administration has contracts in place with six major hearing aid manufacturers - GN ReSound, Oticon, Phonak, Siemens (Signia), Starkey, and Widex. The VA uses the manufacturer's premium levels of technology-the same hearing aids that sell for the highest prices in the private sector.

The VA gave me an "exam" via Skype, then a pair of $5 K Oticons with a succession of different earpieces.
I heard better without them.
They never offered any help with the tinnitus I have experienced since we provided security for a 175 artillery battery that fired non-stop for over a week.
And that was about the best experience I had with the VA.

Bummer. Mine sync with my smart phone so I can turn on white noise to drown the tinnitus.
