I had Christmas drinks with a couple of my girlfriends over the weekend. Life has been busy for all of us over the last 6 months or so, and we haven't seen too much of each other (although I did go on a brief 2 day weekend holiday with one of them) so it was really good to catch up. I've known these girls since high school, and they say that childhood friends will always be able to know you better than the friends you make in adulthood. I find that to be true with these girls. I think because they knew me as a teenager; a time when we're all just starting to get a sense of who we might become and what sort of things motivate us; so it was good to talk about everything with them. We all lost touch after HS and reconnected a few years ago at a HS reunion. Even though we weren't really that close in HS, we have discovered that we're pretty good friends as old farts.

Who ever would have thought that could happen. So anyway, I'm glad I have these girls in my life. I hope they're glad they have me.

Old friends are nice. The added history also gives you added trust. Like they already saw you in your awkward times and they know you saw theirs, so blackmail keeps everyone equal.

Yup, right back to High School without skipping a beat. Your poor wait staff.

Well it was only Char's partner waiting on us. He seemed to enjoy taking the photos anyway.

Ali, you and your friends look marvs.
Wish I was there!

Making me happy today, a lovely card I received from my post-lady.
Some background:
I don't have a doorbell, and live two floors up, so I can't hear anyone knocking on the door, unless they are very persistent and even then I have to be listening out for it to assume it's for me, as I live on a busy road with people going in and out of offices, slamming car doors, decanting from tourist coaches etc.
This means that anything that does not fit through my letterbox has to go back to the Sorting Office and although that's close, it isn't available for collection for 24 hours - longer if it's a Saturday.
So from about Easter this year, Karen took to leaving anything which she knew wouldn't fit through my letterbox in the Sorting Office, and leaving a card to say it was available for collection immediately.
This is not correct protocol, but meant I was able to receive items from eBay or Amazon much more quickly. Ditto when my Mum sends me helium balloons.

So as it's Christmas, and it (used to be) traditional to tip your binmen and postie, I took a box of biscuits into the Sorting Office and also sent Karen a card with a small token in.
Being me, I also wrote in it that she had made living away from friends and family much easier and I really appreciated her kindness.

Came down today to find a card from her in return.
She knew I'd been in hospital (I had someone come and collect my post, and he went to the Sorting Office to collect something, explaining I was ill) and wished me good health.
She thanked me and said I'd made her day.
She offered her best wishes if I was travelling over Christmas (knowing I'm an immigrant in Yorkshire terms.)

Bless her.

I almost want to send her another card to thank her for her card thanking me for my card.
Don't worry, I won't.

I never see the binmen - in fact I have real issues with dealing with disposing of rubbish, so they get nothing.
But I'm so glad I made her and the staff who I see at least weekly when I collect my items, happy.

Sundae, you are a very giving person. You give even when you don't have much yourself. This is a quality I could use about 400 tons more of. (edit: meaning I should exhibit more of that quality, not that I want to receive more of that quality...or, er...do I even make sense? You know what I mean.)

Thanks for the card you sent. It's very cute and very sweet. I was really surprised, and it made me smile.

I don't have a ton of time while cow orker is at lunch but I wanted to say thank you...I will be writing you a PM, but I thought I should acknowledge it here, too, though everyone already knows, how kind you are.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I am waiting for my friends, the guy part a sober driver, to pick me up for festivities. I go out my front door and to what do my wondering eyes appear? A FedEx package! Inside is the promised book that I can't wait to begin reading. And it was wrapped in star paper with my name in silver!

Friends make lonely people happy. Thanks jim.

Merry Christmas to you all, with love.
