Eeny, meeny, there are two vocabulary threads going.
I don't have to look words up very often, especially those on the first page of the newspaper.
Yesterday it was "chyron," sometimes "Chyron," with an s to pluralize.
Looked it up today, forget a dictionary.
Anybody know it without looking it up?
Then (clue Twilight Zone theme) at the same time I came across:
"When we buried poor Jack, we took care
To provide him with coins. We're aware
Charon's ferry's not free;
Jack needs cash for the fee:
Hence the death penny meant for his fare."

Great Cards/Braves game today; going to game 5.

Without looking it up: current usage is the text at the bottom of a TV news channel. Probably adapted from a more general definition.

After looking at the link: I was wrong about the more general definition.

I've not heard that referenced much, but always heard/seen it called a crawler.

Crawler, scroll or chyron, they are one with poison oak and ticks.

They are the proof of recent studies that multi-tasking is bunk.
You cannot read the crawler and listen to the concomitant dialogue and understand both and are likely to comprehend neither.

I have no idea why they are used, but there is a good reason you don't see them during commercials.

My impression of chyron philosophy, if you will, is that it was never about multitasking, but rather snagging different types of viewers into the same space. Someone may be disinterested in the particular story being discussed by the anchors, but they don't change the channel because they can distract themselves with the chyron stories until something better gets the spotlight. P.T. Barnum figured out a long time ago the value of having three rings in his circus instead of just one.

They're still almost certainly damaging us by shortening our attention span, but whether it's to a greater degree than flipping between channels was in the first place, I'm not sure.

Are there ever two at once?
Seems like that might double the effect.
I am pretty sure it is not a plan to increase our viewing pleasure.
