November22nd, 2015: Booth Window
A stain glass window in NYC depicting who is often called the greatest American actor and the greatest Hamlet of the 19th century, Edwin Thomas Booth. Never heard of him? Maybe you've heard of his older brother Junius Brutus Booth Jr or younger brother John Wilkes Booth. The window of Booth contemplating a mask, is at 5th Avenue and 29th Street, in "the little church around the corner".
In the 19th century actors were considered by most folks just above criminals and below tinkers. When one actor in NYC died, and his friends tried to make arrangements at a church, the rector refused and said, try "the little church around the corner". That church is the Episcopalian, Church of the Transfiguration, which has been the favorite of show folks in NYC ever since. This window honoring Booth was "placed by the players", in 1898, six years after Booth's death.
