Whatever country this was filmed in, I assume there is no protection for bats. Which is sad, because as V says, they are an extremely important part of the ecosystem, especially when it comes to managing flying insect populations.

The roofers probably killed them anyway - they were forced out of their home during conditions where it would be difficult for them to orientate themselves. That many bats trying to find a safe haven in daylight? It's not good news.

Oh and rabid bats? Less than 1% of the bats in the US are infected.
They are maligned and misunderstood and useful creatures.
And they wouldn't be invading human spaces if we'd left their environment intact.

Just saying.

If I were one of those roofers, I would have stopped to put on a dust mask. There's a tremendous amount of dried bat shit towards the lower levels of the roof, and that stuff was getting blown into the air by the breeze..

Even if the bats don't have rabies or hantavirus, you don't want to get bat shit in your lungs.

That's a LOT of bats. I'd be willing to bet that there are more rabid bats than any other animal that can get rabies, here in the US. I have absolutely no info to back that up, it's just a poor, uneducated Gravdigr's thought.

ETA: The whale/dolphin thing was just about as cool as it gets. But...black & white pix??? And also this: The things you see when nobody on the friggin' boat has a video camera!?!?!

From http://www.dem.ri.gov/programs/bnatr...d/pdf/bats.pdf
Quote:
Bat rabies has always occurred at low levels within bat populations and researchers estimate that less than 1 % of all bats are rabid. Most bats are healthy and are beneficial in controlling insect pests. However, more of the bats submitted to the Health Department Laboratory for rabies testing were positive with the rates between 5-15 percent. It is unclear what the reason for this is. In addition, a high rate of rabies in bats, submitted from rehabilitators, shows that the rehabilitation of sick bats is unsafe.

It is also known that cold temperature and hibernation slows down the virus so the bats may be incubating the virus over a year.

Seems logical to me. Bats awake during the day are sick. Maybe rabies, maybe something else. But if the bat is around for people to find, catch, and submit to the Health Department, the chances of it having any disease are going to be much higher than the normal rates of that disease.

Sorry, I assumed it was somewhere in South America.
To be fair I only watched the clip and there weren't many clues.

Clod says what I would (and as always, more concisely).
Animals taken to the vet will have a higher percentage of any given illness than in the general population.
Ditto bats submitted to the Health Department.

If 99% of bats are healthy, that's a LOT of insects being scoffed.
