Does anybody out there know why some are in front, some in back and some are multiples (4, 6, 8)? It would really make things easier to understand. Thank you.

I would think the multiples are linked to the number of offspring likely to be produced, and location by the physical abilities.

I think the common rule of thumb is twice as many as the typical litter, for mammals.
