External memory

Anyone had any experience with these?
A friend is thinking about buying one, any thoughts?

You say not to buy an external hard drive, but you don`t say why?
What if you use it to back up your pc?

They make empty IDE harnesses that you can plug an IDE hard drive or CDROM into to "make your own" USB drive. It might be a cheaper alternative (I think I've seen them for about $100 but haven't really shopped for them) if you happen to have an unused hard drive lying around.

I'm kidding. Just make sure you've got a USB 2.0 port (the retail Maxtor drives come with a card that will give you a USB 2.0 port) or your transfers will be godawful slow. I have two Iomega 40GB FireWire/USB 2.0 drives, an external Buslink 40GB FireWire drive and two 120GB FireWire/USB 2.0 drives that I rolled myself (like SteveDallas suggested). They're pretty awesome. Just make sure you have the connectivity.

External memory

Thanks for the help with the external memory!I recently got concerned after I accidently installed Outlook while already having OE.Outlook hijacked my restore function in XP. I had to go in and uninstall Outlook before I could get my system restore and OE working again.I figured if it was that easy for my software to cause problems, how hard would it be for someone to create a virus that would do the same thing.
Appreciate the help.
