April 3, 2012 Alfombra

An alfombra is an elaborate carpet-like work of art made up of flower petals and colored sawdust.

During Santa Semana, or Holy Week (the week prior to Christ's death), alfombras can be found all around Antigua, Guatemala.

If you get a chance to see one in person, quickly take your picture, because before long a procession will come walking through scattering the petals to the four winds.

There are many wonderful examples of alfombras on the internet. I found this one here.

Gosh.
That bring a new meaning to the idea of ephemeral pavement art.
At least chalk drawings last until the next rain.

Beautiful.

Minor clarification: it's "Semana Santa." Oh, "alfombra" is just spanish for "carpet."

These are nice. So, they work on them for probably several hours, just to get destroyed shortly thereafter? (Reminds me of the "Downtown tokio - ARRRRGH - Godzilla!" Calvin & Hobbes strip)

That is exactly what has put me off cooking for the last year.

It is also reminiscent of the Buddhist sand drawings.
