Still, I'll get my parents before I leave this morning.

No returns!

Of course I wondered what this meant, and googled it. I'd never heard of it, but this is one of the posts (from 2003!) about it I found:

Never heard of this custom, but the game I played in NY and L.A. as a child, where you run up, knock on a door and run away is called "White Rabbit" in England (source:ex-Monkee Davy Jones, in a 1966 interview). I remember the reference, 'cause we never knew the game had a name!

When I was a kid there was (in those days & in these parts) a very derogatory name for the same game, involving the 'N' word, and 'knockin'. I've never heard it referred to as anything else. For that matter, I haven't heard it referred to at all in about 30-35 years...

My understanding of N-word knocking involves driving around at night in a pickup and throwing watermelons at people in a certain demographic group.

That's what I thought.

also, when we were on the road, if my boys saw a mini or a beetle, they'd say, "punch buggy red (if it were a red one) no returns, white rabbit!" while punching the other.

Thank god they're over that one. There are a lot of little cars on the road these days!

The white rabbits thing is especially the first of March although it has seeped into other months. When I was growing up, it was just supposed to be good luck to be the first one to say it, I think.....

The other months of the year you just abuse eachother.
Pinch, punch, first of the month.

And if the person hasn't said "No Returns!" you can respond with:
A punch in the eye for being so sly or
A punch and a kick for being so quick.

They're not over it here. I can't tell you how many times I've heard kids say,as I drive by, to other kids or parents "SLUG BUG YELLOW" as they're punching them in the arm. I laugh at them (and wave out the top if the lid is down) and the kid is usually looking and we all get a chuckle out of it.

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about PUNCH BUGGY/SLUG BUG (note, minis etc do not count):
