March 10th, 2018 : Big Mofo Canoe

Generally we think of canoes as small water craft for one, two, or three people to navigate usually pretty calm waters.
Yeah I know, when the wind comes up half way across the lake it can get pretty scary. But that’s the point, it would be much
less scary in a boat.
The Algonquins built Birch bark canoes up to 44 ft(12meters) long with a crew of 10 or 12 that would carry 3 tons(2722 Kg).
Then there’s the fur traders for Hudson Bay Co who had big tough canoes to haul out tons of beaver pelts.
I thought the largest would be the ocean going Polynesian/Hawaiian Ocean Going canoes but I guess it could be argued
they are actually boats.
Wrong, paddle breath. The African Embarkation Canoes take the cake at 40 feet long, 21 crew, and 200 “passengers”.

I guess those Embarkation Canoes carrying slaves out to the trader's ships got a pretty good workout. Of course some slaves
were loaded in a few ports but the canoes got a share of the 12,116,211 recorded slaves transported of which 10,450,004 survived.

Plus the ships flagged as USA but of course there was no USA from 1500 to 1776, but the might be counting privateers
and pirates home-ported in what would become the USA.

This just the trans-Atlantic trade, there was also a trade between the Americas and the Caribbean islands.

A million anythings is almost too many to comprehend.
12 million human beings rounded up, shackled and shipped just can't be held in the mind. All but 6 states have fewer people.

There are 40 boxes of paper on this pallet. Each box contains 10 reams. You probably purchase one ream at time when you buy paper and know how much that is. (500 pages of paper per ream)

Doing the math, this pallet contains 200,000 pages of paper.

You would need 5 of these pallets to get to a million.

That's a lot of paper.

That's a lot of paper.
Yet at the same time, my kids' annual school supply list includes two reams of paper from every secondary student, which comes out to about 1,400 reams of paper, or more than 3 pallets, each year. Americans use a lot of paper.

Now this is a lot of paper:

Quote:
We've wiped out our last toilet roll! German town that accidentally ordered 12-YEAR'S worth of toilet paper finally uses the last sheet

A town in Germany has finally used up its huge supply of toilet roll, 12 years after its council accidentally made a massive bulk order to save money.

The town of Fuchstal in Bavaria accidentally ordered two truckloads of toilet paper in 2006, but when the first truck was delivered, authorities in the 4,000-person town quickly realised their mistake and cancelled the second order.

However, they were still left with a huge supply of toilet paper and the situation worsened when residents rejected the product because it was a grey, single-ply brand that tended to turn yellow and go brittle if exposed to too much sunlight.

Officials set-up a team of four people to distribute the toilet paper as they struggled to deal with the supply.

Rolls were put in several public buildings and filled the attic of the local storage building.

They were also shoved in all the available closets and cabinets in local schools, the town hall and the firehouse.

However, the botched order did allow the town to save some money.
We were able to save up over €1,000 (£855) because the price of wood went up next year, which also made toilet paper more expensive,' town mayor Erwin Karg was quoted by the DPA news agency as saying.

Inspired by the savings, the town has already placed its next bulk order of toilet paper, although it has made sure not to order so much this time around.

The paper will also be white and two-ply this time, and will not be delivered all at once.

'In my case, it will probably take another 12 years to get used to this,' the mayor said.
