Well, things have been in a bit of an uproar (one of the reasons I sort of turtled for awhile). Dad finally passed away from pancreatic cancer in February, and after taking care of him for so long, it feels like an alternate universe now that he's gone.

Also, I got laid off the other week -- publishing is dying fast.

So really it hasn't been too great, but every day above ground is a good day, right?

Thanks for the warm welcome, good to see your e-faces again

Noodle, sorry to hear about your Dad. Mine passed away from leukemia last June, so I feel your pain on that one. My heart-felt condolences to you and your family.

On the lack-of-job front, you'll also find lots of company around here. Sign of the times, unfortunately.

Glad to see you here, though.

Well, I don't know mrnoodle, but I happen to like noodles, so welcome back mrnoodle. Sorry to hear about your dad. And your job. It really does suck that publishing is going down. We need newspapers and books in free societies. A society without a free press is not a free society. (and I do not believe the internet can make up for newspapers and books. It is not discriminating enough.)

Anyway... Looking forward to getting to know you. And better times.

The internet is one of the, if not THE main reason newspapers are failing. Well that and the lack of advertising revenue. Which is it you want the newspaper WITH advertising or no newspapers? You cannot have the one without the other - somebody has to pay the bills.

Much as I hate advertising, I would rather have the newspapers with advertising. With newspapers, the advertising is generally for local events and sales and stuff. Very different from the advertising in magazines and on TV. Still, I would always choose a free press with the warts. Advertisers will some way to get us anyway. I just hope we never get to the point like it was in that movie Minority Report. ugh. Can you imagine?

Advertising in print is no different than any other medium. Its still advertising. The only difference is the reach and the ability to demographically or geographically target.

I believe what you were referring to earlier when you stated your opinion that advertising was so terrible is/was specifically pharmaceutical advertising. Since you never took the opportunity to clarify, I am still uncertain.

hmmm, I'm not sure which which reference you're talking about. I have mentioned advertising more than once. I just really, really hate most kinds of advertising. Most of it is insulting in some way or another. Of course, there are a few good commercials, and some funny ones, and some print ads really are gorgeous, but IMO, most of it is just pointless garbage. It used to be an art form. Most of it isn't anymore. Why human beings want to fill their minds with that garbage is beyond me. I know, I have very strong opinions about certain things, and I don't mean to offend anyone. it's just my opinion.
