April 27, 2007: Elephant hospital in Thailand

The Russian images site ochevidec.net has turned up another set of lovely shots from an elephant hospital. With no information except for "elephant hospital in Thailand". It looks like this set was taken with an artistic eye, rather than to document the place, but nevertheless they are quite interesting.

Things must be moving forward for the economy in Thailand. If you think about the crazy resources that went into Barbaro, folks have to be pretty productive to sustain what could be considered nonsense, but produces unoticed benefits for veterinary science. Is Thailand producing excess wealth or is this a barebones operation to put the animals back to work?

Elephants are revered in Thailand, so it makes sense they would have a special hospital for them.

Is that leg amputated? Difficult to see. I thought the first picture showed a trunk cast, but now I'm not so sure.

I thought so too Cloud, but now I think it's just draped over the bar.

I think that's the trunk... it's the left front leg in the bandages.

Another landmine victim?

Friends of Asian Elephants, Elephant Hospital is the Worlds first Elephant hospital project.
Quote:
Budget : Approx. 10 Million Baht/Year
Infirmary Units, Resting Unit, Baby Infirmary,
Laboratory approx. 20 million Baht
1 Thai baht = 0.0307772802 U.S. dollar

National Elephant Institute, under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani, has established a free elephant hospital.
Quote:
Because the infirmary of the Institute was too small to cope with all the sick elephants waiting to be treated, funds were donated to build a free public elephants hospital at the Institute. It still lacks equipment and medical supplies, a water treatment system and a crane. This is necessary because sick elephants cannot stand up on their own; a crane is needed to pull them up.
Sadly it sounds like they have a ways to go.

Time moves on. One time Thailand was one of the few that didn't play the money market. ! baht was a 5 cents. Just how much money US is the above number?

5 cents to 3 cents is a hefty drop, but better for the elephants when US money comes in.
