Jan 25th, 2018 : Stuckie

40 years ago loggers in Georgia were cutting down what they thought was a Chestnut Oak but turned out to be Dogwood.

Quote:
When they sawed off the trunk, they discovered the mummified corpse of a dog entombed inside. Apparently, the dog had chased his prey down a hollow in the tree where it became stuck and then died of starvation. Dry conditions inside the hollow of the tree allowed the corpse to dry without rotting. The upward draft of air apparently carried the scent of the dead animal away, so it wasn't devoured by insects or other creatures. The tannic acid of the oak, which is a natural desiccant, also helped absorb the moisture and hardened the animal's skin.

Quote:
Instead of pulping the log, the loggers donated it whole with the dog still stuck inside to the Southern Forest World, a museum in Waycross dedicated to the history of forestry, where it remains on display.
They pulp Chestnut Oaks?!?
Quote:
For twenty years, the dog was called simply "Mummified Dog." But in 2002, the museum ran a name-the-dog contest, and the name "Stuckie" was chosen. The 4-year-old dog has been known by that name since then.
Thank God it wasn’t Stuckie McStuckface.

Oh ok, they cut it down and if it's no good for lumber they pulp it. That makes me feel better.

The packet looks like a dessicant bag. Either while it was shipped, or when the received it at the museum. On display the ends are sealed.

Wide format printer at work was pronounced dead. I told minion we're naming new one Printy McPrintface. Home Office has decided to spend more than it costs to replace the printer to try and fix it :/

Home office is either really dumb, or really smart. Maybe the new models of that printer have poor reputations and frequent breakdowns, and the old ones are worth repairing because they are built better and are generally more reliable. Or maybe not, and the home office are maroons.

Speaking of printers, at work I just parted with my 1995 LaserJet 5. I had taken it with me through 6 office moves over 20 years. It had printed 64,620 pages in its lifetime, and anchored this corner of the building in place with its massive tan body. I hadn't used it too much lately, but when I had to do a big print job this week, the pages were coming out dirty and a toner swap didn't fix it, so I requested a new printer. My new printer is tiny! And clean. And sparkly white. And it doesn't have a funky burnt smell when I use it. It will even print double-sided without reloading the paper in the tray after printing one side. But I'm a little worried the building will tip over now.

It's not a desiccant bag. It was an M.R.E given to the dog to help him. Unfortunately, he remembered they're really called by people in the know "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians" and opted for suicide.

Turns out, Company contracted to be in charge of printers is making the fix job cheaper by not sending the tech to do it. Apparently, they're sending the part and talking me through doing it tomorrow. Or so they think. I'll be long gone before the part arrives and their "experts" wake up and call me. If it ever does arrive. This is "hell week" when all the monthly sales and promos change over, I'm already 25 hours in after two days, I have 15 left. My labor isn't going to be as cheap as they think if they expect me to hang around waiting for the part and instruction.....

Meanwhile...back at the topic......

Boaty McBoatface was funny. Stuckie is not. It's pathetic. The picture is very interesting, though -what a cool find. Good thing the loggers didn't whippet out of there.

Name suggestions? ....
Jerky

I'll get my coat.
