Nov 13th, 2017: Disaster Memorials

Joseph Reginella is a sculptor based in NYC. He builds props and sets for TV commercials, and window
displays for department stores. In his spare time he created memorials to little known tragedies of the city.

The Brooklyn Bridge Elephant Stampede.

The Staten Island Ferry Disaster.

He also creates a website for each with newspaper type photos, newsreels, and documentaries.
He also creates handbills and brochures to circulate to make the public aware.
This would be a great public service if it wasn’t all fake. I guess it’s a great public amusement service.

People will believe they never heard of a 1929 Elephant stampede, but what about a 1963 Staten Island
Ferry disaster with 400 people killed? He chose the date JFK was killed so it’s easy to understand how
it got pushed off the front 20 pages.

These memorials are created from materials that don’t weather well, like Styrofoam and plaster, so they are
only displayed for short periods. When not on display a plaque replaces them with a sign telling folks when
they will be back. That way folks won’t be completely disappointed and have something to take a selfie with.

In Reginella’s other spare time he comes up with things like this.

Yes, he's a sick puppy... I like that is a person.

Perhaps the elephant stampede was inspired by the people stampede in which elephants were afterwards used in a demonstration to deter future panics:

Why did the New Yorker put out the cover of Barnum's elephant test in 2004?

Don't know. Don't even know if it was in reference to Barnum's Elephants, might have been Republicans. Both those pictures came from a link out of sexobon's link.

Seems the timing and reason behind the cover was the August 30 - September 2, 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City, leading to a repeat for Dub.
