September 5, 2011 USA Labor Day 1908

The Women’s Trade Union League float, New York City, 1908.

Labor Day was created in the early 1880s "as a way of showing tribute to the workforce that built this nation (USA) and made it great."

Labor Day became an official holiday in 1894 and was to be celebrated with a parade to show the “strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations,” followed by a festival.

Over 100 years later, we still celebrate the holiday with gusto, however the focus is no longer on trade and labor organizations, as it was in the beginning. Now we celebrate workers of all types, which is how it should be.
