I hate to tell you this, but I'm very, very happy.
I know that's not what you'd expect from me at all.
I'm not the kind to smile and bow out gracefully.
I always wanted to take it to the wall.

But I found somebody with a heart as big as Texas.
I found an angel with the golden wings.
She saw me down here in the dark somehow.
And everything is different now.

Yeah, I miss the old crowd sometimes,
And the wild, wild nights of running.
You know, a starving soul can't live like that for long.
You go around in circles that just keep getting smaller.
You wake up one morning and half your life is gone.

I got so tired of that; I got so lonely.
I dropped down and I called out to heaven,
"Send me someone to love."
Heaven shot back, "You get the love that you allow."
And everything is different now.

Oh, and it's sweet to know
The wisdom that living brings
Since I got a telegram from the God of Simple Things.

She said, "I don't care what you do for a living."
"I don't care what kind of car you drive."
"All I want to know right now is what do you believe in,
And what it means to you to be alive?"
"Will you stand here in this fire with me?"
"Are you ready for another life?"

I bit that bullet and took that vow,
And everything is different now.
Everything is different now.

Don Henley ~ From "Inside Job"

and

Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the tear drops from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning thru your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game
Of life

So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
Your dream is over...
Or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A door way that I run thru in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize, and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you hear and see
This magic new dimension

I -- will be watching over you
I -- am gonna help you see it through
I -- will protect you in the night
I -- am smiling next to you .. in Silent Lucidity

(Visualize your dreams
write them into permanent form
if you consist in your efforts
you will achieve
dream control

how is that, better?

dream control
dream control
help me)

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're some from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

I -- will be watching over you
I -- am gonna help you see it through
I -- will protect you in the night
I -- am smiling next to you ..

The Boy who wouldn't hoe corn

traditional tune
Dan Timinski has a great version with Union Station

Tell You a little story and it won't take long,
'Bout a lazy farmer who wouldn't hoe his corn.
The reason why I never could tell,
That young man was always well.

He planted his corn in the month of June.
By July it was up to his eyes.
Come September, came a big frost.
And all the young man's corn was lost.

His story, kith, had just begun.
Said: "Young man, have you hoed some corn?"
"Well I tried and I tried, and I tried in vain.
"But I don't believe I raised no grain."

He went down town to his neighbour's door.
Where he had often been before.
Sayin': "Pretty little miss, will you marry me?"
"Little miss what do you say?"

"Why do you come for me to wed?
"You, can't even make your own corn grain.
"Single I am, and will remain.
"A lazy man, I won't maintain."

He turned his back and walked away.
Sayin: "Little miss, you'll rue the day.
"You'll rue the day that you were born.
"For givin' me the devil 'cos I wouldn't hoe corn."

That is about the best worthless lazy ass loser song that I have seen ... that the song ends with him bitching about her reaction AND NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT is delightful.

Maybe not? Maybe he was going off to be the worlds best farmer and make her sorry she didn't take him while she could.
Or maybe he was going off to smoke pot and remain a failure.

This is one that I've been listening to a lot lately. I really identify with it right now, so that's why it's affecting me.

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again.
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
still remains
within the sounds of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
Beneath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Diturb the sound of silence.

"Fools," said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sounds of silence.

Murder by Numbers

Written by sting & andy summers

Once that you’ve decided on a killing
First you make a stone of your heart
And if you find that your hands are still willing
Then you can turn a murder into art

There really isn’t any need for bloodshed
You just do it with a little more finesse
If you can slip a tablet into someone’s coffee
Then it avoids an awful lot of mess

It’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you’re flushed with your very first success
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you’ll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It’s a habit-forming need for more and more
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Because it’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc

Now you can join the ranks of the illustrious
In history’s great dark hall of fame
All our greatest killers were industrious
At least the ones that we all know by name

But you can reach the top of your profession
If you become the leader of the land
For murder is the sport of the elected
And you don’t need to lift a finger of your hand

Because it’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your a, b, c, d, e

dar512. For anything I said or did and for anything I might ever say or do, to offend you in the slightest way, I am truly and deeply sorry.

My pick for meaningful lyrics for tonight: What God Wants, God Gets by Roger Waters off of the Album Amused to Death and pretty much any song from that set.

Not an album to listen to while driving on a grey day down a two lane road, alone, for miles. It'll get you thinking, probably a little too deeply, about your life.

Read this thread, hoped someone would resurrect it. My fav song about heroin addiction is Skid Row's Wasted Time. Kind of deep for a hair band song.

You and I together in our lives
Sacred ties would never fray
Then why can I let myself tell lies
And watch you die every day

I think back to the times
When dreams were what mattered
Tough talking youth naivete

You said you'd never let me down
But the horse stampedes and rages
In the name of desperation

Is it all just wasted time
Can you look at yourself
When you think of what
You left behind

Paranoid delusions they haunt you
Where's my friend I used to know
He's all alone
He's buried deep within a carcass
Searching for a soul

Can you feel me inside your heart
As it's bleeding
Why can't you believe you
Can be loved

I hear you scream in agony
And the horse stampedes and rages
In the name of desperation

Is it all just wasted time
Can you look at yourself
When you think of what
You left behind

(repeats some of the other lines)

The sun will rise again
The earth will turn to sand
Creation's colors seem to fade to grey
And you'll see the sickly hands of time
Will write your final rhyme
And end a memory

I never thought you'd let it get
this far, boy.

Here's a great one for the unrequited lovers amongst us...I think we know who they are...

She Loves the Jerk - John Hiatt

We've talked it to death, cryin' on the telephone.

Nights when he drinks at home, she has to whisper throught her tears.

"Johnny," she says, "you'd never do these things to me."

But I can never make her see he's wasted such precious years.

Well, "you married the wrong guy" is all I ever say.

CHORUS:

He's a no good so and so, but she'll never let him go

Though she knows it will never work, she loves the jerk.

She loves the jerk.

He was the guy always out on the make.

I guess he had what it takes to turn the heads of pretty girls.

She thought he would change; the worst of us will settle down.

But he couldn't stay out of town, not even with this precious pearl

Now she lives with the lies and the bumps and the bruises.

REPEAT CHORUS

Well, I hang up the phone and I pretend she's in my arms.

What I wouldn't give for just one-tenth of what she gives Mister Charming.

REPEAT CHORUS

He's a no good so and so, but she'll never let him go.

Though she knows it will never work, she loves the jerk

Not to worry Bruce. You're a cool dude.

The part I like about that song is that you think it's all about serial killer thinking - until you get to the last verse. Then you realize it's really a political statement.

hey, what do you think this one's about?...I can't tell if it's literal or allegorical......

Blues Traveler Regarding Steven

Well I've guessed your name and I'm sure you know mine
I'd like to discuss our mutual friend
I can't help but feel that I left him behind
Does he still stay with you or did his pain ever end

I guess
I don't deserve to know
If he ever let go
I guess
I don't really need to see
If he wound up with you or did he ever break free

When we were both young, you took us in
And taught us to play survival games
He'd lost so much that you let him win
But I had a home so it just wasn't the same

I had the strength
To look you in the eye
And say goodbye
I was lucky
And I didn't have to play
Does he still stay with you or did he get away

I used what I had and I escaped
I smelled something good and I followed it's track
But all he could smell was the world that you shaped
It took all my strength and I just couldn't look back

I remember him
Calling after me
I keep that memory
The last thing he screamed aloud
Was "Hey don't you leave me alone!"
Yeah he might live with you but he called me his home

Yeah I guessed your name
And someday so will he
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break free
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break free
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break

I'd have to go with allegory - due to the use (twice) of the phrase "I've guessed your name". In addition, knowing the name confers the power to break free.

However, it could be a description of a real story, but presented in a metaphorical fashion.

The problem is the writer doesn't give us enough to chew on to make the distinction.
