They shoulda made an action movie of "Lawyers, Guns & Money" in the 1980s, but I fear it is passé now. Some among that anonymous "they" did come to an understanding with Zevon for Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead -- reckon that paid for some pain pills later.

Now this requires its own posting. This Irish rebel song depends in considerable measure on its delivery for its effect. Off the top of my head, I think the author was Thomas Moore, but I could be mistook.

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you will find him.
His father's sword he has girded on
And his wild harp slung behind him
"Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword at least thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The minstrel fell, but the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under.
The harp he loved ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its corse asunder,
And said, " No chain shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free --
They shall never sound in slavery!"

(Repeating the last four lines rallentando and più forte makes a good finish)

After growing up hearing my parents listening to Johnny Cash, it was kind of wild when he did Nine Inch Nails "Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hold
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My ssweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

That Johnny Cash album was like .. well he knew he was outa here & like a farewell type thingie. Semi morbid and a little spooky if you ask me. Like the "Street Survivors" album for Van Zant......
Great works, both of 'em.

Seems artists that are going through personal trauma like health issues or divorce do good music. Passionate performances.

Vern Gosdin is a good example. He has been through exactly as many nasty divorces as he has cut hit albums. He admitted it in an interview. Said the only way he could come up with all the tearjerking material was when he was knee deep in it himself. I checked it out (being a huge Gosdin fan) and the records chronologically parrallel his divorces. He can really write some sad shit.

Happy Birthday Jerry

Jerome John Garcia
August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995

All the years combine, they melt into a dream,
A broken angel sings from a guitar.
In the end there’s just a song comes cryin’ up the night
Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years.
Stella blue. stella blue.

When all the cards are down, there’s nothing left to see,
There’s just the pavement left and broken dreams.

In the end there’s still that song comes cryin’ like the wind.
Down every lonely street that’s ever been
Stella blue. stella blue.

I’ve stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel, can’t win for trying.
Dust off those rusty strings just one more time,
Gonna make them shine, shine

It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free,
There’s nothing you can hold, for very long.
And when you hear that song come crying like the wind,
It seems like all this life was just a dream.
Stella blue. stella blue.

A number of people/groups have done this song. I first heard it from a Celtic group called "North Sea Gas". Fine music.

If Wishes Were Fishes

I wish I was home again, at home in my heart again,
It's been a long time since my heart talked to me;
Wastin' my precious days, wishin' my life away,
If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets in the sea.

If wishes were fishes, I know where I'd be,
Casting my net in the dark rolling sea;
And if my net's empty when it comes back to shore,
I'll throw it away and go fishing no more.

I wish I was young again, my song still to be sung again,
The sweet tunes of my life have gone sour and off key;
Writin' my tired old rhymes, tryin' to turn back time,
If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets in the sea.

If wishes were fishes, I know where I'd be,
Casting my net in the dark rolling sea;
And if my net's empty when it comes back to shore,
I'll throw it away and go fishing no more.

I wish I could care again, reach out and share again,
Mend what's been broken and let it run free;
The older I get, it seems the more wishin' takes the place of dreams,
If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets in the sea.

If wishes were fishes, I know where I'd be,
Casting my net in the dark rolling sea;
And if my net's empty when it comes back to shore,
I'll throw it away and go fishing no more.

Another Super Power Winning Friends

"Fields Of Athenry"

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling
Michael, they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyan's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

[Chorus:]
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

[Chorus]

By a lonely harbor wall, she watched the last star falling
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray, for her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

[Chorus]

The Proclaimers

Yes I know you’re right
I see it in your fierce eyes
But me I’ve never thought straight
Since the day I had the first doubt

Yes I know you’re right
And I’ll back you to a point pal
But I’ll never be constrained
By another man’s ideas now

I spent too long on this road
Looking for the answers
But poverty and failure
Aren’t what I’m after

I painted fight on factories
But they closed the factory down pal
I want to find out where the heart’s gone
Find out where the nerves gone

What do you do
When democracy fails you
What do you do
When the rest can’t see it’s true?

Pat votes the scots way
Just like her mother
But south always takes all
Just like her brother

The next time she might vote
So might the others
But times running out pal
Cause they’re giving up in numbers

What do you do
When democracy’s all through
What do you do
When minority means you?

Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you

Some things take so long
But how do I explain
When not too many people
Can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears
Their eyes can't hope to see
The beauty that surrounds them
Isn't it a pity

"The Trouble With Me"

You see the trouble with me
I've got a head full of fuck
I'm a basket case
I don't think I can love, love, love

You see the trouble with you
Is you're in love with me
What a strange thing to do
What a brave place to be

So we dive
On sunset strip
Our hearts so deep
I drown in it
And as it breaks
I swim through cracks
And leave with words
I can't take back

You see the trouble with me
Monkey see monkey do
There's no you in tomorrow
A better offer came through
You see the trouble with you
There's no trouble with you
So when you say that you love me
That stops me loving you

So she stays
On sunset strip
Our hearts so full
I drown in it
She's waiting for
My words to break
The one true love
I couldn't make

So she walks
That golden mile
Men will try
And catch her eye
We both know
What could have been
On sunset strip
Our broken dream

Save Me by Unwritten Law

Had a bad day, don't talk to me,
gonna ride this out,
My little black heart, breaks apart,
with your big mouth.

And I'm sick of my sickness
Don't touch me, you'll get this.
I'm useless, lazy, perverted,
and you hate me.

You can't save me,
You can't change me,
Well I'm waiting for my wakeup call,
And everything, everything's my fault.

Went to the doctor, and I asked her,
to make this stop. (whoa)
Got medication, a new addiction,
Fucking thanks a lot.

I had to relapse, I'm bad at rehabs
It ruins everything. (whoa)
So point your finger, at the singer,
He's in the pharmacy.

You can't save me,
You can't change me,
Well I'm waiting for my wake up call,
and everything's my fault.

You can't save me,
You can't blame me,
Well I'm waiting here to take a fall,
and everything, and everything's my fault.

And I'm a death threat haven't slept yet,
Baby why the wake up call
I'm the bad boy tell the tabloids
everything's my fault.

Whoa whoa whoa yeah, write it write it,
Whoa Whoa whoa everything's my fault,
everything's my fault.

I went to heaven, but couldn't get in,
For what I have done.
I said please take me, they said you're crazy
you had too much fun.

You can't save me,
You can't change me,
Well I'm waiting for my wake up call,
and everything's my fault.

You can't save me,
You can't blame me,
Well I'm waiting here to take a fall,
and everything, everything's my fault.

You can't save me,
You can't change me,
You can't save me,
You can't change me,
You can't save me,
You can't change me,(everything's my fault)
You can't save me,
You can't change me,

Everything's my fault.

Cold

Looking back at me I see that I never really got it right
I never stopped to think of you, I’m always wrapped up in things I cannot win
You are the antidote that gets me by, something strong like a drug that gets me high

What I really meant to say
Is I’m sorry for the way I am
I never meant to be so cold
I never meant to be so

Cold to you, I’m sorry about all the lies, maybe in a different light,
You can see me stand on my own again cause now I can see
You are the antidote that gets me by, something strong like a drug that gets me high

What I really meant to say
Is I’m sorry for the way I am
I never meant to be so cold
I never meant to be so cold

Never meant to be, so cold

I never really wanted you see the screwed side of me
That I keep locked inside of me so deep, it always seems to get to me
I never really wanted you to go so many things you should have known
I guess for me there’s no home; I never meant to be so cold

What I really meant to say
Is I’m sorry for the way I am
I never meant to be so cold
I never meant to be so cold
