Official Theivery

CT became the 14th state to outlaw Civil Asset Forfeiture without one no vote in either house. Originally touted as a way(big surprise) of breaking drug cartels. the cops could grab your cash and property even if no charges were filed, and even if they were and you were found not guilty.

Quote:
But even with the new safeguard, there are several glaring defects in Connecticut’s forfeiture laws. For starters, the state still allows police and prosecutors to collect 69.5 percent of the proceeds from forfeited property. That provides a strong incentive to seek cases with a hefty payout.
Moreover, Connecticut agencies can spend forfeiture money without any public oversight or accounting, leaving both the public and lawmakers (who are supposed to control the power of the purse) completely in the dark. And unlike recent reforms in seven states, the bill does not address the federal equitable sharing program, which has long acted as a loophole to bypass state reforms.

Supreme Court Limits Police Powers to Seize Private Property

SCOTUS has decided but this will probably not stop CF because it's so profitable.

“People are still going to lose their property without being convicted of a crime, they’re still going to have their property seized,” Mr. Hottot said. “The new thing is that they can now say at the end of it all, whether I’m guilty or not, I can argue that it was excessive.”

Justice Department reverses Eric Holder policy on civil asset forfeiture

What I'm most concerned with is people "suspected" of criminal activity. Not a conviction or possibly not even any substantial evidence. Cops see your property. They suspect collusion. Cops freeze or confiscate your property.

Game over.

Unless you have a half a billion bucks to hire lawyers that will back stab you when under extreme pressure from the Man, AND THEN have the audacity of sending an emissary to beg for a pardon after completely FABRICATING testimony against you.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday rolled out a new civil asset forfeiture policy aimed at expanding law enforcement's ability to seize property from people suspected of criminal activity."

I wish someone would put these a-holes' feet to the fire on this.

Some of the stories over the last few years make my blood boil. If they search your car you're better off if they find drugs than cash.

Yes, cash.

Most people prefer cards of some kind. I prefer having paper cash AND a card.

And a little gold. And a 50lb box of dollar coins. In a cart that I pull behind me.

I'm a fan of "physical" currency. It's more difficult to hack. But that's what the cops LOVE, physical cash. No trail.

When YOU do it, it's suspicious. When THEY do it, it's for the public good.

This is when it's good to know the mechanic that works on the cop cars. And where they park the city/county vehicles.

All kinds of things can happen...
