Firefox 4

I've been switching back and forth between Chrome and Firefox depending on who's faster at the moment (mostly).

I like the speed of Chrome, but I don't like the limited preferences and the lack of a regular menu bar.

Firefox 4 has bookmark sharing and is close enough in speed to Chrome to warrant changing back to Firefox.

I like the drop down menu of email addys that firefox has, chrome makes me select all and type in the start of the address I want.

Firefox, otoh, keeps crashing whenever flash or java starts. I've dowloaded and installed all the updates. pos.

I don't understand the appeal of browser "speed." I thought that ubiquitous high-speed internet had solved the problem of ever having to wait for anything to load. What exactly is bowser "speed" in a tangible sense? How is it visibly manifested?

Two things.

Browser start up time. In the past, Firefox was considerably slower from double clicking the icon to being ready to use than Chrome. Much less difference now.

Raw pipe speed is only part of the story. Once you have all that html on your machine, you've got to parse it and render it. (Can be recursive, of course, if there are references in the html to other documents) All that takes time. Firefox used to not be as good at it as Chrome. Again, much less so now.

Not so much in how fast words and images are displayed, but how fast Javascript is executed, how quickly Flash and Java are handled, that sort of thing. For AJAXy web pages like ESPN where there are all sorts of dynamically-generated menus dropping down and ads playing while at the same time Flash video is playing, and there are wildly different mouseovers for every link on the page.

But mostly how it loads in 2 seconds instead of 10 seconds when you start it. Firefox 4 has caught up in that regard, it now loads in 3.5 seconds.

There ya go. It takes Pete less formatting time and fewer sentences to render the same opinion. Pete is Chrome 10 and I am FF 3.6.

I never would have figured startup time, as IE simply pops open and there it is.

One feature of FF4 that I just found is Panorama:

Quote:
Panorama is a new feature that allows you to group and organize your tabs by task. In addition, it offers beautiful eye candy and an attractive interface.

I use it to keep separate tabs for research, news and reviews.

Well, yeah. But you're not counting the time it then takes to close it back up and open a useable browser.

I can count the times Firefox has crashed on me on one hand, and have fingers left over. IE? Hundreds, if not thousands.

I switched to Chrome a while ago. Firefox was having some issues. I didn't like Chrome at first but after adding extensions it feels more useful. I am quite at home with it now.

I have a bookmark bar, A bookmark drop down menu, speed dial which has the option of including extra pages up to 9 rows and 9 columns.

It is fast but that isn't the reason I have it.

This conversation reminds me, My internet provider tries to sell me extra fast speed internet, or blast internet as they call it. I say, my internet is fast enough, which for me it is.

dammit, where is the "view page style" that strips out the fancy stuff? (not the page source, the page style)
