Oct 16, 2009: Axolotls

The Axolotl (Ax-oh-lot-ul) are from Mexico. The Aussies call them Mexican Walking Fish, but they aren't fish, they're salamanders, which are amphibians, like frogs and toads.

But who the hell cares about that technical stuff, they're cute (mostly) and edible. They are pretty small, but hot Axolotl soup on a cold rainy day... Mmm Mmm Good.

Weird inside-out gills! They don't have to pump water past their gills constantly like fish. But then, I guess their air oh die namics are lagging.

I bet they'd be good deep fried (lovely crispy external gills)!

My Xoloitzcuintli ate my Axolotl!
I've been a fan of these critters for many years but never knew that :while the most commonly accepted translation is "water-dog" (from "atl" for water, and "xolotl", which can also mean dog). That ties 2 strong interests together because I am also a fan of the xolo dog.

Wow and they come in a wide variety of colors. And as we all know a colorful meal is more appealing.

Are Mexicans still illegal if... they're still in Mexico?

I hate these things!
Those little gills get caught between my teeth, kind of like celery strings do.

I knew I'd run across this word before:

The Axolotl

I've never met an Axolotl
But Harvard has one in a bottle
Perhaps - and at the thought I shiver
The very villain from Fall River
Where Lizze Borden took an axolotl
And gave her mother forty whaxolotl.

-- Ogden Nash (of course)

[scratches head] dunno, I always called them axolotls. It's a bitch to spell, though.

Our high school had some in a tank, cool little critters.

I remember the axolotl from a segment in The Outer Space Connection.
