A Veruca/Verucca is a Plantar Wart. That's why the name is perfect/funny in the book. But you lived in the UK, you know that right?

I never went to any of those, my time there was cut short before the harsh S. Yorks summer.

Oh man, they were gross and the main reason I used to hate going. we'd always try to jump over them, but they were too wide

Footbaths at a swimming pool in order to eliminate plantar warts? Nice. Way to spread the wart virus ...

Verruca means wart ... verruca vulgaris is the common wart ... verruca plantaris is the plantar wart. They're all warts, just in different places. A plantar wart hurts more because you step on it all the time. It's the same virus as the wart on your finger or forearm.

It's true that warts can be spread via showers or sharing shoes. Just one reason I don't shower at the gym.

it was the 70s. but at least we eventually developed immunity. verucca may mean wart, but in British English is specifically means a plantar wart and therefore is wholly inappropriate/hilarious for the name of a shoe. So......

here's another little spot of teh bodily funnies for you

I'm sure I've said this before, but when I had my verruca as an early teen, I was taken out of lessons to be treated by the visiting chiropodist. Which many of my co-infected enjoyed, but I missed some of one of my favourite lessons/ teachers.

Matron was always in her office anyway, but she made a special effort to be close at hand when it was my turn. Because they were worried I would faint. Never have done in my life, I was small and skinny but physically robust. Just so ultra-squeamish that the sight of the scalpel made me so queasy I know it showed on my face. I think she had a quiet word with him, because he stopped trying to reassure me by talking me thrugh exactly what he was doing...

I had a verruca sock, so I could shower with the rest of the girls after games (joy - flat and hairless as a nine year old boy and a rubber sock as well), but forgive me if I decide against the shoe.

What next, chlamydia panties?

It took me a while to figure out from context what a Veruca Gnome was supposed to be doing when reading Hogfather.
