British newspaper

I found this June of 1940 Daily Mirror newspaper.
It has Churchill's Never Surrender speech, how even if the island get overrun, the old girl has a lot of children out there who with the help of the British Navy will come rescue Mom.
It talks about the escapes from Dunkirk and Calais, plus an air raid on Paris.

But it also had things I hadn't thought about. I knew the kids have been moved out of London, many to Canada, but it talks about moving livestock away from the coast.
The Minister of Food pleading with manufacturers/suppliers to hold the line of prices, and have pity on soldiers wives/kids.
The first person charged under a new law with being a "Rumour-Monger", for spreading some bullshit heard on a German radio broadcast.

Things that aren't headlines but paint a picture of the times.

Indeed one of the greatest speeches ever, by anyone.

As time goes on, the more I realise the enormity of the mess we were in in the summer of 1940.

Had Hitler invaded, our allies would have come to our aid and, by joint effort, we'd have eventually prevailed, but at what cost and how long would the war have continued?

He was a quote machine.

Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it.
That's my favorite, I think.

The caretaker at my primary school (Mr W) served in the Coldstream Guards during WWII.
I remember him telling Dad about his guard duties at Chequers.
Churchill was in the habit of walking alone in the wooded grounds in the dead of night as it gave him the opportunity to think without interruption.
On one occasion the PM suddenly appeared, said 'Good evening, sentry' and equally suddenly disappeared once more into the darkness before a salute and a spluttered 'Good evening, sir!' was returned.
Mr W admitted to being somewhat frightened at the time!

Good job he didn't shoot him.
