Intelligent people can be, and often are, very stupid.

I've seen this for real, and it's always puzzled me. I rationalized it as just because they don't agree with me doesn't mean they're stupid... just wrong.

Quote:
Paul Frampton has prodigious intelligence. A (former) tenured professor of physics at the University of North Carolina with more than 450 publications to his name, he undoubtedly possesses a high IQ, as well as a considerable capacity for "logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning, creativity, and problem solving."

But Paul Frampton is not intelligent. After all, no smart 68-year-old man would get tricked into thinking that transporting $400,000 dollars worth of cocaine from Bolivia to Brussels would earn him the love and affection of world-renowned bikini model Denise Milani. To fall for such an obvious honey trap, one would have to completely lack skeptical reason, sound judgment, and the ability to think critically.

Frampton's case perfectly exemplifies the most important thing to know about intelligence: Intelligent people can be, and often are, very stupid.
More here.

How smart you are in your field of expertise doesn't necessarily correlate with how smart you are in the field of impressing bikini models.

If common sense was common, everyone would have it.

When it comes to pussy and cocaine, hardly anybody will use proper judgement.

I know I won't.

Here's another.

You'll see what I mean when you get to how he deals with clothing.

And, just about everything else, when you come down to it...

I liked this article (in the OP).

Really smart people are just as dumb as the rest of us.

It's pretty much all crazy, but the clothes thing is ludicrous.

He claims to be striving for minimum impact on the Earth but actually he's living a bare subsistence life no civilized people want.

It's the law, asshole, go live in a cave.

But HM is right, the clothing is over the top.

Clothing
I enjoy doing laundry about as much as doing dishes. I get my clothing custom made in China for prices you would not believe and have new ones regularly shipped to me. Shipping is a problem. I wish container ships had nuclear engines but it’s still much more efficient and convenient than retail. Thanks to synthetic fabrics it takes less water to make my clothes than it would to wash them, and I donate my used garments.

It bothers me immensely that all clothing is hand made. Automation is woefully absent from the textile industry, but I don’t think it always will be. For now a few new t shirts and jeans per month is not very offensive. I certainly buy less clothing overall than a typical consumer. Synthetic fabrics are easy to recycle and I believe will soon be made with biofuels. Still, this area needs some work.
"A few new t-shirts and jeans a month". I don't buy that many clothes. Makes it sound like he buys new rather than washing.
Synthetics? Oil. And he's worried about the water used to make them.
He really doesn't have a clue.
