This is an opportunity. With no more Castro or Chavez, Sean Penn will be on the hunt for another Communist asshat he can visit and admire. Hopefully the next one beats his wife so they have something to talk about.

I've never understood the love that some of my fellow liberals give folks like Castro, Mao, etc. But a friend of mine said something that I can appreciate: "We don't have to endorse his actions to understand Fidel Castro was a fascinating icon. Amazing accomplishments. Just wrong goals."

Yep.

That tendency in liberals makes me keep my distance. There is a love of power there that is ah,.. illiberal.

Here is the Human Rights Watch summary of his record for five decades of killing, repression, surveillance, beatings, arbitrary detention, economic stagnation, mass flight, propaganda, punishment of journalists, forced re-education of gays... the list of offenses just goes on and fuckin' on...

"A fascinating icon."

They loved him. Like they loved the murderous Che. I'm pretty sure it's because they are subject to exactly the same type of "big man" persuasion they pretend to hate so well in Trump. Once persuaded you will excuse everything, even murder.

"Just wrong goals." That's just about the worst thing I've ever heard.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, whose father fled Cuba during the Castro years, called Trudeau’s statement “disgraceful. Why do young socialists idolize totalitarian tyrants? Castro, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot — all evil, torturing murderers.”

Other Twitter users, as you’d expect, took it a lot further, using the #trudeaueulogies tag to mock the prime minister and satirize his comments.

"While controversial, Darth Vader achieved great heights in space construction & played a formative role in his son's life,” quipped Jason Markusoff, a correspondent for Canada’s Maclean's magazine.

Added Canadian sports commentator Mike Hogan: “Today we mourn the loss of Norman Bates, a family man who was truly defined by his devotion to his mother.”

And offered Australian news columnist Rita Panahi, “Although flawed, Hitler was a vegetarian who loved animals, was a contributor to the arts & proud advocate for Germany.” ...

Cuba wasn't a workers' paradise. It was North Korea with cheap rum.

I think he IS a fascinating character...much like other tyrants. That doesn't mean you AGREE with them.

And we've had the communism discussion before...like many systems, it has good ideas, but in theory, works for shit.

I can forgive Fidel for the "crime" of punishing journalists. The rest of it, not so much.

I keep having this recurring fantasy of spanking Candy Crowley while watching Bill O'Reilly hang by his thumbs above a pit of crocodiles. Maybe I have a tyrannical streak in me......
