Except that it wasn't a very good story.

My problem that I mentioned wasn't so much "what moral is the author trying to tell me?" as "why is this scene in the book at all?"

I suppose I expected a story of the Second Civil War. Instead, it a was a set of stories about famous historical personnages and what they would have done had the Civil War been won by the South (because of the letter that failed to be discovered by the enemy). He did not try to tell a story, and that may have been my problem with the book.

He had seven characters, following mostly independent threads, most of which were not very interesting. The only character in the book about whom I liked to read was Schlieffen. The threads were mostly seperate, and would have been poor stories on their own.
The same sentiments were repeated over and over again, and they took a long time to develop.

It did seem like it was setting up the next set of novels. There were a lot of interesting moments within the story. It could have been a good story. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
