Home Invasion Defense Rules:

1. Always wait for the invader to physically enter your home.

2. You have the right to remain silent: Don't say anything. Don't make any noise. You might scare the invader away.

3. Shoot til you run out of bullets.

4. To the officer: "I was in fear for my/my loved ones' life/lives."

5. From the officer: "Good job, Mr. Citizen."

In Colorado we have a make my day law. If someone breaks into your home and shoot them, you are just exercising your rights. You gotta be care though if you shoot them as they're coming in the front door that the fall forward INTO the house, not OUT.

Sarge didn't have an option for liberal Westerners who would have to have their rifles and shotguns pried from their cold, dead fingers; so I didn't vote in the poll.

Here in VA, you wouldn't get a 'good job citizen' response after shooting someone in your home. And VA is known for its gun-friendliness. They would want to know the circumstances first before arbitrarily patting you on the metaphorical back. Killing the perp creates more paperwork than a home invasion. And then you better make sure you're a stellar citizen ahead of the potential manslaughter charge you'll have to defend yourself against (where, if you can prove it was a self defense act, then no harm, no foul, other than your time and legal fees). As an individual, a cop may praise you or agree with your actions, but in terms being agents of the law, there's still the paperwork.

Basically, you can have a gun in your home, you can carry it openly or carry it concealed with a permit, but if you're going to use it, you better be damn sure it's a responsible discharge. If you're ready to deal with the aftermath, have at it. If you're not, things will suck either way.
