Aug 24, 2009: Birdbrains

Birdbrains, two of them.

On the left we have Sony Dong, who was arrested in March after coming in from Vietnam, caught with them strapped under his pants at Los Angeles International Airport.

And on the right, a 23-year-old Australian returning from a trip to the Middle East was caught with two live pigeons in his pants, according to customs officials. They said the man could be charged with wildlife smuggling, an offense punishable by 10 years in prison.

Vietnam to L.A.? Middle East to Australia? Those aren't commuter hops, they both take long hours, it's a wonder the birds were alive.
I don't know about Dong, but the Aussie could get 10 years, probably won't, but how many years is worth the risk?
How much money could either of them make on those birds, to make it worth the risk?

Birdbrains.

I've heard that a breeding pair of sulphur crested cockatoos can bring $10,000 in the right market. Here, farmers consider them pests. Even plain old galahs can fetch $1,500.

The term "budgie smugglers", well, that is somewhat different.

If I were going to tape birds to my calves, I wouldn't wear black shoes.

Maybe they thought the birds could be useful should the aircraft lose power?

Budgie Smuggling sounds like another euphemism for a male camel toe.
