Invariably tongue firmly in cheek, nowadays. In our neck of the woods, it seems to have been introduced by Italians/Sicilians in New York and the Northeast in general -- as Italian has its plural "you" and they were sure English had to too -- "Youse guys..."

That happens. US Navy guys on liberty almost stereotypically visit an Immigration office after a week or so -- "Just lookin'." Oz would certainly be my personal second choice of anywhere to live on the globe.

Aussies and Americans get along, having really much the same temperament. Something to do with a fundamentally English society and the common experience of frontiering it into a broader, hotter country. And being hard on the natives.

I haven't met anyone from either country who wasn't having a complete blast visiting the other. And being thoroughly amused not only at how the other party talks funny, but also how far their own accent is currently drifting to how the funny-talking guys sound.

7. When you hear that an American "roots for his team" you wonder how often and with whom.

7.a. When an American exchange student brushes her hair and declares "My bangs are out of control" you offer polite congratulations.

8. You understand that the phrase "a group of women wearing black thongs" refers to footwear and may be less alluring than it sounds.

I often wondered about dress standards in the oval office.

19. You believe that cooked-down axlegrease makes a good breakfast spread.

Mmmmm vegemite. It's actually a kind of cheese made from kangaroo milk.

21. Hamburger. Beetroot. Of course.

Hey! I said the lot. Where's the PINEAPPLE??

40. You get choked up with emotion by the first verse of the national anthem and then have trouble remembering the second.

There's a second?

at this thread ... there are so many more...

You will fight to the death over Commodores Vs Falcons. Or AFL Vs Rugby.

You "naturally prefer" whichever beer is brewed in your home state.

You know The Don's batting average ... to two significant figures.

Your folk heroes include a vagabond who commits suicide to avoid prosecution for sheep-theft.

You know why John Sattler is famous ... and is seldom invited to make speeches.

OK, I should do some work now ...

Just because I'm nominally polite, does not make me a pussy. Sundae Girl.
