Who's Dropping Round for a Cup of Coffee?

A cup of tea in our house, naturally.
It's a variation on the dinner party question, but more realistic.

Mum and I were talking like friends last night (yay!) and agreed that we would hate any of the dinner parties that we could put together from our favourite people, because we'd feel overwhelmed, talked over, ignored.
It may be our joint lack of self-esteem, but if you really think it through, I bet you'd feel the same.

We had a good old chat about who might come round for a cup of tea.
Mum says it has to be in a lovely hotel suite, because Vic didn't do a great job on the skirting boards, and there's still the ghost of a bloodstain on the stairs from when Dad fell over.

SO.
One person.
Alive.
One-on-one. Oh okay, you can bring a significant other.

Mum settled on Bradley Walsh. Unknown outside this country, and probably even by many in it, although he's carveed out a successful career in light entertainment.

I dithered.
Then decided it had to be Michael Palin.

Not John Barrowman?
No.
I want a nice quiet cup of tea, some sandwiches, some anecdotes and world-enough-and-time.
And underneath the twinkly exterior a very intelligent and erudite man.

Much as I adore JB I can only imagine interviewing him.
Although I'd love to have tea with his husband, Scott Gill.

My second choice would be Declan Donnelly.
I'm my Mum's daughter.

Rik Mayall after six pints in a local pub.

That would be a riot.

Ian Paice, Deep Purple's drummer and the only one dead or alive to have been in the band throughout its entire life, as well as having played in most of its offshoots as well.
also brother-in-law to the late Jon Lord.

Michael Palin was a great choice. This will require some thinking.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you could top Palin.

Problem is, as an introvert, I really wouldn't want to have tea with any stranger. I mean, I'd do it, because you'd be a fool to squander the opportunity to talk with someone famous and interesting, but it would be hard to find someone that would be enjoyable to spend time with, rather than just someone you could brag about later.

I've heard Drew Barrymore is a really nice person and easy to get along with. Maybe it would be fun to have tea with her.

Stephen Colbert. The real guy, not the character.

I suppose that this might not be seen to be in the general vein of the topic, but one would like to entertain Susan Powell, BBC weather presenter, with a pot of Tesco's best Assam and a custard cream or two.

Being the gentleman, and all round spiffing chap, that I am, I would not open up the conversation to discussion of warm fronts.

BTW Sundae...

That brings back memories. I had to look it up again and it does seem a bit racy for a poem written in the 17th Century.

To His Coy Mistress.

Steve Martin.

I would in a sense be meeting with the great comic minds of our times: he is purported to have been involved in a great poker scene, consisting of (according to various stories) Neil Simon, Bob Newhart, Johnny Carson, Chevy Chase, Don Rickles, Carl Reiner, Martin Short. I imagine they laughed, a LOT.

From the Wild and Crazy Guy album, which my parents owned...to his tv appearances and films, I have always though Martin to be a funny and extremely personable guy. I named my first cat Toonces, after Martin's "Toonces the Driving Cat" on SNL.

And my first question? "Jack Handey. That's you, isn't it?"

(Martin falls off his chair, in awe of my powers of perception. Then he asks to marry me. Or at least asks me to play poker.)

Rest easy, sex wasn't actually invented until I had it in 1988.

This is tenuously connected, but I was singing songs from Little Shop of Horrors in ma heid last night when I couldn't sleep.
And I made myself snuffle with laughter at the idea of meeting Steve Martin. Because I'd have to say Orin Scrivello. DDS. Looking down, and in Ellen Greene's hyper-babydoll voice.
I'm sure he'd call the Police. It's good to know you could put in a word for me.

Never occurred to me, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were right.
