Drunk Astronauts

From here, a story about astronauts driving drunk.

I have two questions.

1. Who was the designated driver?

and

2. What are they going to crash into up there anyway?

NASA's latest blunder? Astronauts driving drunk
TU THANH HA

From Friday's Globe and Mail

July 27, 2007 at 12:51 AM EDT

Considering how image-conscious NASA is, the news couldn't have been more bizarre yesterday with the disclosure that some astronauts once blasted into orbit while blasted.

The bombshell, first revealed by the magazine Aviation Week & Space Technology, is outlined in an internal report NASA is to make public Friday.

But to some former managers at the space agency, it was no surprise.

They spoke of a looser-ruled era in past decades when such drunken transgressions could have happened and been accepted by compliant flight surgeons.

"...it wasn't?"
"No dude it was an asteroid!!!"
"Sweet dude!!"
"I'm so tired, dude, but I can't even tell what time it is out here..."

You'd have to get me pretty drunk to make that trip.
1-They're so well trained they could do it in their sleep.
2-Huston is watching everything they do up there with a microscope.
3-The critical stuff is done by computers for most of the trip.
4-They're John Wayne mother fuckers, so no problem.

We were discussing this at work this morning. Question came up "What were they drinking?"
The first response was "Tang." That was quickly followed by "Vodka."

This made me wonder "If orange juice and vodka is called a screwdriver, what do you call orange juice and Tang?"

At least in the old days (Mercury, Gemini, Apollo), the computer on the ground was driving, for the most part. Rocket go up, rocket come down, that's about it.

The astronauts were only capable of a bit of attitude adjustment in orbit ... the real driving was pretty much confined to things like landing the LM.

Perhaps this explains a lot more about Gus Grissom losing that Mercury Capsule?
