April 22, 2008: Ice wave

Beltnah sends you another one.
You may have seen this, it's been floating (no pun) around the net this winter.

One of the sites it's on says;
Quote:
Frozen Wave Phenomenon on Lake Huron.
Michigan has had the coldest winter in decades. Water expands to freeze, and at Macinaw City the water in Lake Huron below the surface ice was supercooled. It expanded to break through the surface ice and froze into this incredible wave.

This wave phenomena is seen in Antarctica, but in Michigan? Yes, it's been quite a winter!

I say, sell it to the Arabs.

Wait, didn't we have this in the cellar already? It is caused by the ice being pushed up rather than water freezing on the way down. I'm certain I saw it here. This is the only place I see cool things.

I don't think it was IOtD. It may have been in one of the picture threads, or you may have seen it on one of the 70 odd sites it's been posted on.

Would make a great pic if someone posed on top on a surfboard.

I got this a month ago from a buddy in Michigan. He finally got tired of waiting for spring, and headed south again.
Ditto, Newtimer.

Snopes has a different (and accurate) explanation.

I love it. There's a little bit of ice somewhere and everyone points and screams "SEE? SEE? How freaking warm is THAT? I laugh in the face of your global warming."

Really cool pic! No matter where the darn ice was. Thanks, cooties, for saving me a drive to Michigan!

Yes, thanks cooties! We're always looking for better information on the IOtD pictures.
I was wondering, if it was Lake Huron, why wasn't it brown ice?

Or inside the tube and was flash-frozen. "Endless Winter," starring Otzi the Swiss Iceman.

Apparently, according to Snopes, "These particular photographs were taken at the Antarctic base of Dumont D'Urville by Tony Travouillon in 2002.

In March 2008, the text accompanying these pictures was altered to place the ice formations in Michigan (due to the recent cold snap there).
