You know what, wolf? I have seen that pic before and always thought you were talking through a megaphone. Now that I really look at it, it's obvious you are taking a picture. Well, not so obvious to me except for the "say cheese" part.

Duh to me.

xoxoxoBruce • Jul 18, 2007 6:24 pm
Bumbershoot = Umbrella = rain = Seattle. Makes sense to me.
Perhaps surprisingly, that word dates from the early days of Montgolfier ballooning and first appeared in English in 1785. (Umbrella itself dates from the early seventeenth century, originally from an Italian word for a sunshade, with the first part traceable back to Latin umbra, shadow.)

The first example of bumbershoot in Professor Lighter’s Random House Historical Dictionary of the American Language is from 1896. There were some variations around in the early days, such as bumbersol (with sol presumably taken from parasol) and bumberell. By the first decade of the twentieth century it had settled down to bumbershoot.

This fairly rare example of the word in print comes from L Frank Baum’s book Sky Island of 1912:

Thank you, but, of course, monster is the real genius behind all this. I'm just glad I got a chance to ham it up a little; my personal brand of humor involves quite a bit of auditory (impressions) and visual (expressions) input, which certainly doesn't translate well to a text environment.

The best way to accelerate an old computer is at 9.8 meters per second squared.

(that's 32 feet per second squared.)

(that's the rate of acceleration due to gravity.)

(On Earth.)

(that's what happens when you throw the damn thing off a large drop.)

Right up until Monster's last. And the truth is Dylan (cat raising paw) is actually my favourite. It so hit the mark it would have to be a winner.

When was the last time you had a whole summer off, no pressure, no obligations, free?
Shawnee123 • Oct 3, 2008 9:20 am
When I was 12...I had a summer job at 13.

But, still...get to the farm at O'Dark Early, be at the municipal swimming pool by noon. By bicycle or by moped...I was free!

Ahhh...good times.

Do you think teenagers are more worldly than we were? Technology makes it seem so.
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 3, 2008 9:22 am
Worldly = worry?
Sundae • Oct 3, 2008 9:28 am
Like Shawnee, my last real summer of freedom was younger than Ibs is now. And when I was 17 I was allowed more freedom and (in my case) no longer had to worry about exams.

And when I was 22 I'd already started to address some of my issues of low self esteem and confusion that plagued my teens.

I've pretty much liked every age I've been - if they've been shitty years it's not been because of my age, but because of external issues. But from 16 until about 24 things just got better and better.

I should take pics of everyone's eyes sometime. Mine are dark blue, Lil Griff's are slightly lighter, Little Pete's are lighter yet, and Pete's are the lightest.

Very Monty Pythoneske...
monster • Mar 11, 2010 12:47 pm
Oh I see, it all has to come back to Monty Python, doesn't it? Can't do nothing without sucking from the teats of the dead parrot sketch. Let me tell you, when i was a lass, we had to do comedy without Monty Pythong BOTH WAYS. And like it. If we didn't laugh we were flogged with a large salami and if we did we were flogged twice! You merkins don't know how good you've got it with your slapstick and jewish humor!

[/chanellingericidle]

People describe The Goodies as a cross between Monty Python and The Monkees. I think that's accurate. I don't think The Monkees is as funny now, as it was when it first aired.

Did you see any Monkees when you were growin' up, Monst? I read somewhere that the Australians imported more US comedy than did Britain. They say the Aussies have experienced The Brady Bunch while the Brits have not. I'm fascinated by this cross-cultural meme-olution.
monster • Mar 11, 2010 5:19 pm
Yes, I didn't think it was funny then, either.

We didn't get the brady bunch but I think many of us are aware of what it is.

I can confirm the presence of the Brady Bunch down here, but I didn't think it was taken as a comedy, more of a highly bowdlerised family soap.
Which makes the various rumours I hear about what was going on in the dressing rooms all the more amusing. I mean Greg and Carol, maybe, but Marcia and Jan?

Zippy, you crack me up.

Ah yes.

One of the things I should remember being 40 and a bit international.
Comedy songs do tend to be time and location specific.
Not the Nine o' Clock News (TV programme) had a song every week. As did Spitting Image (ditto). I doubt they would be relevant now.
Hmmmm, case in point

Not only is the basic premise now outdated (this was made during the aprtheid years) but so many of the references would baffle my niece and nephew, let alone furriners. Or were in-jokes to start with.
