The Lumberjim Memorial Knitting Thread
"We wiill NOT discuss knitting!!!"
A basic hat pattern from The Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns.
Patons Shetland Chunky Tweed yarn.
Post your stuff!
Here's a little something I prepared earlier ...
Is that made of Arran yarn, Limey?
Very cute - I notice the jade? attachment, is it a birthday bear?
doesn't the term 'memorial' indicate my demise? do you know something I don't know, steved?
I think its the gopher from Caddy Shack, that's high explosive...

I love it!!

It just sounded better than "honorary".
He's a lucky kitty made from hand-dyed Peruvian (sounds almost illegal, doesn't it?!). He's supposed to be waving money around, but I thought a jade doodad would be just as good.
If I remember I'll post a pic of something made from Arran Aran yarn later.

You could write for
J Peterman!
"Made of the finest Peruvian wool, this cushy lucky kitty will elicit memories of an era once thought passed: elegant, innocent, yet slightly sinful, your own hand-made moppet will resonate with your unique heritage. Limey's Lucky Kitten, Item 5489 $59"
(Sigh, I think I missed my calling.)
I think your mother is calling you.
lol...she just emailed me. She said "get home and I TOLD you about playing with those scruffy neighbor kids in their basement."
I finished my scarf!!
(Using my most bitchin' needles!)

So what's it like knitting with glass needles? I'd be afraid of them breaking all the time. They're fab-looking needles, though!
They're plastic, actually..
Saddest part is I could only find them in those four sizes, so if I ever need a different size I'll have to buy inferior needles...
(Awwww, now you've got me wanting glass needles!...Wonder if I could have them custom made..hmmm......)

Don't they make it hard to see the thread?
Great scarf!
My mum loves knitting and traveling, and whiles away long hours in a transit lounge and on planes knitting. Until the new security regulations banned knitting needles :eyebrow: , but she's resourceful. One ball of wool and two smooth-bodied biros, and she's off on a rather thin scarf!
Nice, Razz...lovely colors!
Those needles look like my....nevermind.
Case, you may have a great idea there for cross-marketing knitting supplies.
Just one word:
Why??
(I've tried to knit -- just can't do it. I can macramé like a madwoman, though!)
Why knit?
Or, why knit that particular, umm, garment, that Bruce posted?

Ohhhhhhhhh, I thought it was a mitten for someone with a very long thumb.
:biglaugha
that was a knee slapper
i can't knit either - i can barely sew on a button
If I lose a button I may as well throw the shirt out.
Why knit?
Or, why knit that particular, umm, garment, that Bruce posted?
Why not? It looks warm. :3
I dunno...that yarn looks pretty itchy......

I thought it was a full-cover condom, made from a different part of the sheep.
I like the little drawstrings, so you can you pull it nice and snug. Cozy!

I agree, do they really need another reason to scratch?
Better not wear that around any cats...
this really could be a memorial thread now the jimbo seems to have cast off his lumberjim loser title. Ooops, I meant user.
I'll bet you (a fair bit) that he'll sign in as lumberjim sooner or later though. It'll just be (in his eyes) something pretty spectacular (maybe a terribly denigrating post towards Spex?) before he does.
So all you cellar lurkers...just wait! The spectacular 10K'th post is coming!
I started a baby blanket for a friend a few weeks ago...and since EVERYONE has a story about the baby blanket they never finished...I'm dead set and determined to finish this thing by december, which if you'd seen my progress so far, I'm doing pretty well. Basically I carry this with me everywhere and work whenever I've got a down second. It's about 400 stitches across on size 5 needles (I've no idea how big that works out to be, and I intend on continuing to stitch until I feel it's long enough. I've got no design I'm working from, this is all from my head, the mom picked out the color of yarn I'm working with. :)
As you can see I goofed the bottom edge, but I've decided I might cover that with a bit of fabric. I make EVERYONE look at it whenever I get another row done, so I'm sure you guys will be getting a lot of photos as I progress. Wish me luck!
That penny looks photoshopped. Why does Lincoln have an afro?
Looks great - Just remember its easier to start than finish. keep up the good work.
Is that perky rainbow cock mounted on a tuba mouthpiece?
Knitting is not to be dissed, nor weaving. : )
If you are stranded in the wilderness, deserted island, you can construct stuff: funky shelter, muklucks, hunting/fish nets, rafts, storage containers, ladders, fencing, hammock, strong rope, jaunty hats, stuffed bunnies.
did lumberjim finally end it all?
I don't knit - well, not very well. I did knit a scarf once. What an ordeal!
I do crochet, though.
And I've been known to be kind of nitpicky.
Details, not lice! :D

Cornet mouthpiece (it's smaller than you think, warch!).
I can knit, but I'm not what you'd call an avid knitter. I have a bagfull of those fuzzy eyelash yarn scarves in a variety of colors, and there's an afghan I've been knitting since the mid-1980s. I yank it out of the closet every couple of years, do a handful of rows, remember why I don't like knitting and back into the bag it goes.
I'm much more of a crocheter ... which is part of how I'm spending my summer vacation ... One of my coworker's became a daddy just before I went on vacation, and since he hadn't returned from maternity leave before I left, I didn't even get a good start on the baby afghan that's my customary gift. Right now, though, I'm hoping that the words "weekend baby afghan" on the pattern are true rather than a come-on to make me buy the booklet. I have 8 days to finish it, so that should give me enough leeway.
This project has, however, caused me to stall on the already delayed Sycamore Wedding Afghan.
I'm slowly becoming interested in crochet, mostly because it's easier and more fun looking than knitting...problem is I so enjoy teasing my boyfriend about wanting to learn it, that I can't bring myself to actually learn it yet. Apparently his older brother got all pissy when his mom taught his sister-in-law how to crochet, cause it takes over your life or something...so once I tire of teasing him about it, I'll probably get around to learning how to do it. :D

Just a reminder...our wedding anniversary is October 20th. :D

Oh, right. I thought it was a ... something else.... nevermind.
Someone more talented than me HAS to knit this one!
Flying Spaghetti Monster!LIMEY.
please to make:

My friends 3 year old has a little gray viking helmet with knitted white horns and a red beard. I'll try to get a photo of it.
That's crochet (you're better asking Wolf for crochet) but I now know what to get you if you're ever my secret Santa victim ....

I loved the knitted items you sent me Limey you are a talent! :)
Got a package from a faraway land a few weeks ago. In it was some very nice fudge that didn't last but a few days ... nowhere near Christmas day.
There was also a small package wrapped and addressed to my son. I told him he had to wait till Christmas to open it. As soon as the tree went up he put it under there. He was very proud to have the "first present" under the tree.
He was very excited to open this gift ... when the time came he was, well I think his expression says it all.
Limey, that was so thoughtful & kind and sweet and and and of you. Thanks so much.
He's been wearing them for two days straight - even in the house. lol
I'm so glad he likes them!

Dead ringer for Lil Pete's beau name of Dan...
I sooooo want one of the crocheted helmets.
Perhaps I should put my continuing obsession with tiny knitteds here, rather than clogging up the "what did you make today" thread with them. Here is Gingerbeerd.

Can you make a monopoly set?

I was going to ransack Grifftopia for each of those actual items and put them in a photograph but I'm tired.
Vintage monopoly pieces are great.
I don't have the ship. I have the others, but I like that ship.
I'm the top hat, or I'm not playing
I want the car or perhaps the shoe.

Are you still tired, cuz I want to see that.
Anyone care to guess which monopoly piece I'd go for? :p
It would be the shoe. All women love shoes. ;)
Nooooo.
It would be the dog!

Love me some Tim Tiger.
Maybe Limey needs a yarn holder?
Yes please Santa!
Sent by thought transference
So the people who make yarn holders at pottery have the "hole" accessible via a slot to the rim so it looks like an upside-down comma) so you can remove the ball from the holder while it's still attached to the garment. This one looks like just a hole so you'd have to cut the yarn, but it won't slip out while you're knitting. Which do you think it should be, limey?
Both are acceptable. You use the sort with the slot I'd you think you're likely to work on your knitting project in places other than at home. Mr Snotter would be for projects which remain at home until completion.
Sent by thought transference
Could do both. snotter on one side, curly tail on the other
Should they stay flat on the surface or be able to roll about? Or is that a matter of personal taste? I thought they should be able to roll, but most I see on the interwebs have features which would make that undesirable if one wanted to keep them in tact
The yarn bowl should stay still on a flat bottom [snicker]. It is the yarn that should roll freely within the confines of the yarn bowl but be prevented from rollicking all around the floor, under furniture etc. by the yarn bowl.

I nearly bought this bogeyman egg separator for Limey for Christmas (
Amazon link). I ran out of money so she had to make do with a calendar!
Great minds think alike; although she'd get far more use from the yarn holder of course.
Cat resistant?
Kinda.

I've commissioned Spencer to create one of these for you, Limes. Just given him the idea, and we'll see what he comes up with. He really liked the Viking hat and is excited about making one as thanks for the time you spent on it. I can't wait to see how it comes out.
Abso-bally-lutely old chap! Looking forward to it!

Not as cool as the Viking helmet, but I would do a double take on an adult. Somebody is selling these on etsy for $54.
I saw this in a video on repurposing of binder clips.
gah!
What the fuck is "Gah"?
I pretend to be afraid of binder clips because I cut my hand badly when I fell on one while goofing around.

Plenty of hats like that on adults round here

Oh, THAT's a binder clip. In these parts we call that a bulldog clip. You got bit by a bulldog clip.

Crochet counts too, right?
Pantone would not approve.
curious...
I was at one of the local Goodwill stores the other day and in the yarn-ish section was a big zippered bag of raw wool, $50. Well beyond my what-the-hell budget, but squarely in my what-in-the-hell?? interest.
So.. it was maybe a rough cube/sphere 18-24 inches in diameter, maybe a few pounds (hard to say how much was tare weight). Is that a good deal? I have no frame of reference at all.
Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, yes? My first attempt at a yarn bowl:
shitty pictures from my phone, sorry. The glaze on the inside is really cool, but you'll have to take my word on that for now.
Splendid!

In case there's a yarn shortage...
Fucking adorable! These are from etsy?
No, but they might be there too.
