Is that made of Arran yarn, Limey?
Very cute - I notice the jade? attachment, is it a birthday bear?
lumberjim • Nov 8, 2007 6:01 pm
doesn't the term 'memorial' indicate my demise? do you know something I don't know, steved?

It just sounded better than "honorary".

He's a lucky kitty made from hand-dyed Peruvian (sounds almost illegal, doesn't it?!). He's supposed to be waving money around, but I thought a jade doodad would be just as good.
If I remember I'll post a pic of something made from Arran Aran yarn later.

You could write for J Peterman!

"Made of the finest Peruvian wool, this cushy lucky kitty will elicit memories of an era once thought passed: elegant, innocent, yet slightly sinful, your own hand-made moppet will resonate with your unique heritage. Limey's Lucky Kitten, Item 5489 $59"

(Sigh, I think I missed my calling.)

I finished my scarf!!

limey • Nov 10, 2007 2:56 am
So what's it like knitting with glass needles? I'd be afraid of them breaking all the time. They're fab-looking needles, though!
Razzmatazz13 • Nov 10, 2007 3:06 am
They're plastic, actually..
Saddest part is I could only find them in those four sizes, so if I ever need a different size I'll have to buy inferior needles...

(Awwww, now you've got me wanting glass needles!...Wonder if I could have them custom made..hmmm......)

Don't they make it hard to see the thread?

Great scarf!

My mum loves knitting and traveling, and whiles away long hours in a transit lounge and on planes knitting. Until the new security regulations banned knitting needles :eyebrow: , but she's resourceful. One ball of wool and two smooth-bodied biros, and she's off on a rather thin scarf!

this really could be a memorial thread now the jimbo seems to have cast off his lumberjim loser title. Ooops, I meant user.

I'll bet you (a fair bit) that he'll sign in as lumberjim sooner or later though. It'll just be (in his eyes) something pretty spectacular (maybe a terribly denigrating post towards Spex?) before he does.

So all you cellar lurkers...just wait! The spectacular 10K'th post is coming!
Razzmatazz13 • Aug 24, 2008 11:00 am
I started a baby blanket for a friend a few weeks ago...and since EVERYONE has a story about the baby blanket they never finished...I'm dead set and determined to finish this thing by december, which if you'd seen my progress so far, I'm doing pretty well. Basically I carry this with me everywhere and work whenever I've got a down second. It's about 400 stitches across on size 5 needles (I've no idea how big that works out to be, and I intend on continuing to stitch until I feel it's long enough. I've got no design I'm working from, this is all from my head, the mom picked out the color of yarn I'm working with. :)

Image

As you can see I goofed the bottom edge, but I've decided I might cover that with a bit of fabric. I make EVERYONE look at it whenever I get another row done, so I'm sure you guys will be getting a lot of photos as I progress. Wish me luck!

Is that perky rainbow cock mounted on a tuba mouthpiece?

Knitting is not to be dissed, nor weaving. : )
If you are stranded in the wilderness, deserted island, you can construct stuff: funky shelter, muklucks, hunting/fish nets, rafts, storage containers, ladders, fencing, hammock, strong rope, jaunty hats, stuffed bunnies.
Trilby • Aug 24, 2008 4:46 pm
did lumberjim finally end it all?
Juniper • Aug 24, 2008 5:12 pm
I don't knit - well, not very well. I did knit a scarf once. What an ordeal!

I do crochet, though.

And I've been known to be kind of nitpicky.

Details, not lice! :D

I can knit, but I'm not what you'd call an avid knitter. I have a bagfull of those fuzzy eyelash yarn scarves in a variety of colors, and there's an afghan I've been knitting since the mid-1980s. I yank it out of the closet every couple of years, do a handful of rows, remember why I don't like knitting and back into the bag it goes.

I'm much more of a crocheter ... which is part of how I'm spending my summer vacation ... One of my coworker's became a daddy just before I went on vacation, and since he hadn't returned from maternity leave before I left, I didn't even get a good start on the baby afghan that's my customary gift. Right now, though, I'm hoping that the words "weekend baby afghan" on the pattern are true rather than a come-on to make me buy the booklet. I have 8 days to finish it, so that should give me enough leeway.

This project has, however, caused me to stall on the already delayed Sycamore Wedding Afghan.
Razzmatazz13 • Aug 25, 2008 5:50 pm
I'm slowly becoming interested in crochet, mostly because it's easier and more fun looking than knitting...problem is I so enjoy teasing my boyfriend about wanting to learn it, that I can't bring myself to actually learn it yet. Apparently his older brother got all pissy when his mom taught his sister-in-law how to crochet, cause it takes over your life or something...so once I tire of teasing him about it, I'll probably get around to learning how to do it. :D

There was also a small package wrapped and addressed to my son. I told him he had to wait till Christmas to open it. As soon as the tree went up he put it under there. He was very proud to have the "first present" under the tree.

So the people who make yarn holders at pottery have the "hole" accessible via a slot to the rim so it looks like an upside-down comma) so you can remove the ball from the holder while it's still attached to the garment. This one looks like just a hole so you'd have to cut the yarn, but it won't slip out while you're knitting. Which do you think it should be, limey?
limey • Dec 28, 2015 7:48 am
Both are acceptable. You use the sort with the slot I'd you think you're likely to work on your knitting project in places other than at home. Mr Snotter would be for projects which remain at home until completion.

lumberjim • Dec 28, 2015 9:58 am

Should they stay flat on the surface or be able to roll about? Or is that a matter of personal taste? I thought they should be able to roll, but most I see on the interwebs have features which would make that undesirable if one wanted to keep them in tact
limey • Dec 28, 2015 10:31 pm
The yarn bowl should stay still on a flat bottom [snicker]. It is the yarn that should roll freely within the confines of the yarn bowl but be prevented from rollicking all around the floor, under furniture etc. by the yarn bowl.

I was at one of the local Goodwill stores the other day and in the yarn-ish section was a big zippered bag of raw wool, $50. Well beyond my what-the-hell budget, but squarely in my what-in-the-hell?? interest.

So.. it was maybe a rough cube/sphere 18-24 inches in diameter, maybe a few pounds (hard to say how much was tare weight). Is that a good deal? I have no frame of reference at all.
