Question: not sure how to describe it, but

is there something I can use to cover the gap between my stove and the counter so I don't drop food down there? (other than not being a klutz and a slob)

I'm thinking of a rubber strip with a spine down the middle--kind of like what you would put into two twin beds to make a single bed. Anyone know what I mean?

I suppose I could fashion something from tinfoil, but it would be pretty ugly.

Anyone have any ideas?

All I now is that if you have a gas stove in the UK, you have to have a mandatory gap between the oven and the nearest counter. I've lived in two rented properties where it has been measured as part of the annual gas checks.

So the answer might be no... But I'm sure if it's an electric hob then there must be an answer out there.

Oh. That's supposed to be there? Well that buggers up my plan of purchasing a piece of wood to plug the gap...

At first I thought the gap would be to keep explosive gas from getting trapped, but then I remembered that gas is heavier than air.
That was probably written into the code to prevent the cabinets from catching fire, before they had the technology to build zero-clearance stoves. That was a problem with the early self cleaning electrics too. Of course now that they can build them, the government can't assume everyone has one, so the law will go unchanged for many years.

I ran into it accidentally. Of all places, it was in the plumbing department...not cabinets, not appliances and not hardware...plumbing. AND, since I probably wouldn't have asked someone in plumbing where it is, asking someone if they have it probably would have been fruitless. So yeah Cloud, I know what you are talking about.
