Somali Pirates

anonymous • Jan 27, 2012 11:03 am
Why can't we just wipe Somalia off the face of the earth? Would anyone really complain?
It isn't like we haven't bombed the living shit out of Iraq a few times.
glatt • Jan 27, 2012 11:08 am
Well, since you posted as anonymous, you probably figure you are wrong to be asking that question, and don't want to get in trouble for it. That tells me that you already know the answer.

Is everyone in Somalia a pirate?
infinite monkey • Jan 27, 2012 12:53 pm
Somali are, somali aren't.
footfootfoot • Jan 27, 2012 12:53 pm
I think some of them are merely garden variety criminals

Why is this a whole new thread?
Shouldn't it be here -
Sundae • Jan 27, 2012 3:10 pm
It's hate-talk.
It doesn't belong anywhere with reasoned discussion.

And given I include TW in that definition (as he is not promoting genocide) you know that's a stretch bigger than Armstrong.

lol - did you even read the other thread? ;)
Sundae • Jan 27, 2012 3:23 pm
I think I did.
Although I don't agree with all that was written, no one said wipe it off the map, women, children old people et al.

Did they?!
Am prepared to be appalled.
infinite monkey • Jan 27, 2012 3:26 pm
No, I'll need a new joke:

1990s: Don't waste alcohol, there are sober people in Ethiopia, you know.

2000s: Don't waste alcohol, there are sober people in Somalia, you know.

2010s: Don't waste alcohol, there are sober people in (insert impoverished nation here), you know.

Huh?

But of course! There it was, right in front of me, and looked past it.

Pure genius, Spexx!

No Sundae - not that I recall.
I was referring to "reasoned discussion" part of your post
and making an apparently not funny funny - hence the

Ah, but the original was a winky. Which was to show you were funning and not attacking. I'm on board with that.

I was suggesting TW is reasonable compared to this anonymous post. And we agree that calling TW a reasonable poster is a often a s-t-r-e-t-c-h.
But I left out the funny.
And once the funny has gone, it's gone.
I left that cake out in the rain.
No cake out in the rain smilie, so it has to be a :sniff:

It was a light drizzle, more of a mist, really.

And the rain is, too.

Some background on how/why the pirates came to be.
In 1991, the government of Somalia – in the Horn of Africa – collapsed. Its 9 million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and many of the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country’s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.

Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the U.N. envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury – you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no cleanup, no compensation and no prevention.”

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by over-exploitation – and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300 million worth of tuna, shrimp, lobster and other sea life is being stolen every year by vast trawlers illegally sailing into Somalia’s unprotected seas.

The local fishermen have suddenly lost their livelihoods, and they are starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: “If nothing is done, there soon won’t be much fish left in our coastal waters.”

This is the context in which the men we are calling “pirates” have emerged. Everyone agrees they were ordinary Somalian fishermen who at first took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least wage a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coast Guard of Somalia – and it’s not hard to see why.

From here.

Of course that doesn't excuse what they are doing, but it does explain why 70% of Somalians, "strongly support" them.

In this country there are multiple issues with Somali immigrants, mostly because of the lawless regime they are escaping from.

GENERALISING HERE.

They are unlikely to vote, not having much understanding of the democratic process. They do not place value on education, not having experienced it themselves. They tend to be hard-line Muslims given that religion has been one of the most stable centres of their life. Young men are used to defending their families by force - issues of honour are highly important.

If you come from a country without an effective Govt where might is right and are offered housing and money, well. It's a culture shock to say the least.

I'm neither defending nor denigrating Somalis here.
Just saying what Bruce said. Brutual regimes and hard times affect people's lifestyles.

Depending on how the election goes, send them here in 3 years. They might feel right at home.

As far as the Somalis are concerned, this is where the ultra-Libertarian/Anarchist argument falls apart. You will need a government strong enough to protect your borders. Not to wage wars of choice, but to actually police the coast and airways.

From the department of deactivated military personnel...

Drugs in room where former SEALs found dead on ‘Captain Phillips’ ship
glatt • Feb 21, 2014 8:11 am
So it was drugs huh? When I heard two dead, and investigation underway, I figured it had to be drugs.

That's too bad.
sexobon • Feb 22, 2014 4:19 am
Looks like those two divers went out on the buddy system.

ETA: RIP
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 26, 2014 1:10 pm
Speers said the Seychelles police report includes observations about the presence of drugs and paraphernalia in the room where the two men were found dead, although the type of drug is unknown.

Could have been pot, so we don't know they OD'd yet.
Methinks it was boredom that killed them.

Yeah. That's got to be a really crap job. Sitting in a tiny cabin, probably breathing a mixture of diesel fumes and salt air, for months on end. Of course they took drugs. It's basically sitting in prison for a living.

I would imagine they were allowed out of their cabin.:eyebrow:

If they asked nicely, I bet they could even go on deck.
xoxoxoBruce • Feb 26, 2014 4:02 pm
Smart ass. :p:
Heroin it is.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police on the island nation of Seychelles say that two former U.S. Navy SEALs found dead aboard the ship Maersk Alabama died of respiratory failure and were suspected to have had heart attacks, possibly from drug use.

The police said Monday that a syringe and traces of heroin were found in their cabin. Police said samples are being sent to Mauritius for analysis to establish if the men had consumed “a substance” that could have caused the health failures.
footfootfoot • Feb 26, 2014 4:33 pm
I say it was a hit and the drugs are a red herring.

Could be, the rest of the crew pissed at these high paid bums that didn't help with the work, grabbed the best prostitutes in port, and farted on the guy behind them on the ladders. :haha:

First movie was Captain Phillips. They cannot call it CP II. What would the sequeal be named? "The Crew Strikes Back"?
