You know when the pentagon was built they made separate bathrooms for the blacks and whites.

The typography of that poster bothers me...

I find it curious that it has a quote from Panetta on it.

Me too.

I thought panetta was a type of bread.
Ibby • Jun 19, 2012 1:01 pm
The quote is, if I'm not mistaken, from a video Panetta recorded in support of LGB servicemembers (trans* people need not apply - they're still barred from service, even if the posters and such imply otherwise) recently for pride month.
wolf • Jun 19, 2012 1:14 pm
The typography is horrifyingly bad.

I will be excited about the idea on the poster when it is no longer needed ... celebrate humanity, people, not individual divisions of it.

I heard about this on the new conservative talk radio station. So far the only thing that is pleasing me about the new conservative talk radio station is that they have more local stuff, and Dave Ramsey. I like Dave Ramsey.

Ib, your link is an excellent read.
No problem in society is ever solved completely at the first try.
But there is hope.

The rock/hard place is the separateness of homosexuality from transgender.
It's most ironic that f->m transition in the military may get some benefit
in being perceived as lesbian, but the opposite is the case with the m->f transition.
We can hope that the more publicity such issues receive in the general public,
the more likely and quickly the resolutions will be.

HUD has taken the repeal of DADT to heart, and in time the military will too.
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based
on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and familial status
(i.e., presence of children in the household).
The Fair Housing Act does not specifically include sexual orientation and gender identity as prohibited bases.
However, a lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) person's experience
with sexual orientation or gender identity housing discrimination may still be covered by the Fair Housing Act.
In addition, housing providers that receive HUD funding, have loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA),
as well as lenders insured by FHA, may be subject to HUD program regulations intended to ensure equal access of LGBT persons.

Examples:
• A property manager refuses to rent an apartment to a prospective tenant who is transgender.
If the housing denial is because of the prospective tenant's non-conformity with gender stereotypes,
it may constitute illegal discrimination on the basis of sex under the Fair Housing Act.

This isn't exactly the thread for it but it doesn't really warrant its own:
So, yeah, we're all familiar with DOMA, right? the law that says the federal gov can't recognize same-sex relationships? Well, there's a growing number of insurance companies who provide benefits to same-sex spouses or partners, just like they do to all other spouses. Cool, right? Well, under DOMA, if your partner's employer-based health insurance covers you too, you have to pay taxes on it as taxable income, unlike between straight partners covered under a single plan.
Hooray for the homo-tax!
ZenGum • Jun 20, 2012 4:41 am
I think they may actually have found a way to stop homosexuality! TAX IT!

Oh and Ibram, your line ' "She", not "he", guys' is helpful, but some of the womenfolk around here get a mite riled up if you call them guys. :eyebrow:
DanaC • Jun 20, 2012 7:00 am
I don't :p

'guy' is a word for males, but 'guys' as a group term can mean either gender.

I call everyone "dude" and "man," even in the singular. Is that okay?

I don't see gender. People tell me I'm female, and I believe them because sometimes I don't get a ticket when a cop pulls me over.
Ibby • Jun 20, 2012 8:17 pm
nice colbert ref

Yeah, the terms "dude" and "man" are fairly agendered nowadays, but it's all about context.
If someone calls me dude, idgaf. if someone calls me A dude? yeah that's not cool. And I've definitely had people call me man when i could definitely tell they meant it not like "mate" or "pal" or whatever but definitely gendered-ly.

They don't care who you're fucking, but they're real persnickety about what you wear.
DanaC • Jun 21, 2012 6:07 am
Yeah. 'man' is another of those words.

Funnily enough the other way around doesn't really work. So, 'guy', 'man' and 'dude' mean male but can also apply to females. But I cannot think of any words for woman that can also apply to males.

Makes a sort of sense linguistically...'man' used to mean person. It was used to signify a male, and it also meant 'person' of either gender. If it was necessary to specify female, then the word became Wyfman.

106.9fm. I think that it was the FM Christian Talk and Music station that even Christians didn't listen to, and before that it was the soft jazz station.

They do have a lot more local programming, and Hannity, but need to learn that more reverb does not make the talk sound better. It just sounds like it's in the bottom of a deep well. The signal strength is far better than 1210AM, and it doesn't fuzz out when I go past buildings with fluorescent lighting, so that's definitely better.

Rush Limbaugh is going to be on there in a couple of days. Next Monday, maybe?

Gay Activists Visiting White House Take Photos of Themselves Flipping Off Reagan Portrait

Real classy. Just the kind of behavior appropriate for the White House. Especially as guests of the President. :headshake

Last Friday, an attaché of important gay people from Philadelphia made a trip to Washington D.C. as invited guests of President Barack Obama for the White House’s first-ever gay pride reception….some of them took advantage of photo opportunities to give the late President Ronald Reagan the middle finger

“It’s not a gesture that I would use in the White House when representing our city and our community,” opines Philadelphia Gay News publisher Mark Segal (center), who opted for a sarcastic thumbs-up pose in front of the portrait of George W. Bush over the more vulgar one demonstrated by his Reagan-loathing peers, Matthew “Matty” Hart (left), the national director of public engagement at Solutions for Progress, and self-taught photographer turned toast-of-the-town Zoe Strauss (right).

Thats the way to win friends an influence people - not.

Yeah, Ibs. See what your kind get up to? Hope you're ashamed :p

The re-write of Reagan's history is well underway.

I'm sure he was a very personable man, with a great flair for humorous quips.
For those of us who lived through his career, there is much that cannot be forgotten.

* his support for the infamous Black List of individuals in the film industry as Communists
* his turning mentally ill patients out on the street without support in order to save tax $
* his silence and inaction on the AIDS/HIV crisis

If you are of the age of the gay/lesbian individuals in this pic, you might understand better their actions...

Reagan's AIDSGATE

1987
41,027 persons are dead
71,176 persons diagnosed with AIDS in the US.

What did this mean in practical terms?
Most importantly, AIDS research was chronically under-funded.
When doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health
asked for more funding for their work on AIDS, they were routinely denied it.

Between June 1981 and May 1982 the CDC spent less than $1 million on AIDS and $9 million on Legionnaire's Disease.
At that point more than 1,000 of the 2,000 reported AIDS cases resulted in death;
there were fewer than 50 deaths from Legionnaire's Disease.
This drastic lack of funding would continue through the Reagan years.

When health and support groups in the gay community were beginning
to initiate education and prevention programs, they were denied federal funding.
In October 1987 Senator Helms amended a federal appropriations bill
to prohibit
AIDS education efforts that "encourage or promote homosexual activity"
— that is, efforts that tell gay men how to have safe sex.

There have been many gay (Log Cabin) Republicans,
and there are reasonable arguments that Reagan, personally,
was not anti-gay. To wit:
Independent Gay Forum
Reagan and Gays: A Reassessment by Dale Carpenter on June 10, 2004

But as the President, his silence and road-blocking in the AIDS/HIV epidemic condemned
huge numbers of men and women around the world to a miserable illness and death.
I suggest that the disrespect shown by these three people was
directed at President Ronald Reagan, not the Office of the President.

Whether you believe that or not is irrelevant,
their behavior at the WHITE HOUSE was despicable.

Of course it is irrelevant. And would not be posted if not for nonsense about liberal vs conservative / left vs right and other extremist concerns. Why do you not post pictures of others doing same to Jimmy Carter? Political bias.

People do this every day on highways. That is also despicable. And not worthy of comment in any Current Events board.

Personally speaking things are going very well also.
