May 15, 2008: Dancer

How'd you like to meet this guy in a moonlit forest?

Photographer's flickr gallery

This dancer was photographed by someone called Oneshotww, at a powwow, in Fredericksburg, TX.

Posted on Wunderground.

OB  Thursday May 15 02:18 AM

Wow, Phantom of the Dance.

That is eerily...beautiful.

SPUCK  Thursday May 15 05:20 AM

It would be bad cuz if I was wandering thru a moonlit forest I would likely be packin heat.

Trilby  Thursday May 15 08:13 AM

I would love it. Esp. if it was Elspode all dressed up for Beltane.

ajaccio  Thursday May 15 10:06 AM

Dancer

He is magnificent.

HungLikeJesus  Thursday May 15 10:12 AM

What's eating his head?

skysidhe  Thursday May 15 10:38 AM

Forest?

HungLikeJesus  Thursday May 15 10:59 AM

The photo seems to be defective. There's a diagonal stripe across his chest that looks out of place.

runswithknives  Thursday May 15 11:28 AM

Yeah i noticed that also. Just slide that stripe down a couple cm and abracadabra, all better.

This reminds me of the creature from "The Village."

Shawnee123  Thursday May 15 12:16 PM

That's Edward Featherhands!

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday May 15 12:18 PM

Yeah, I don't know what that's about? It doesn't show in this picture.

[speculation] The photographer said, "Almost every time I tried to get a pic of this dancer, he had a camera up to his face taking photos of others, LOL."
Maybe he was trying to photoshop out a camera strap, where the color picture was taken during a dance. [/speculation]

Cloud  Thursday May 15 12:28 PM

well, but . . . he's not actually dancing.

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday May 15 12:30 PM

Well but, he is. :p

Clodfobble  Thursday May 15 03:00 PM

A friend of mine in college was way into the Native American cultures and the local powows--back in the day, you can be certain he would have been at this particular one in Fredericksburg, but I don't know if he keeps up with it anymore... anyway, a couple of us were out driving in his girlfriend's car (he had no license because he was blind in one eye, but that's another story) and we got pulled over by a state trooper. He starts sweating bullets, and doesn't calm down until the speeding ticket's been written and the guy is long gone. We asked what was up, since this kid was the last person on Earth to be holding drugs or anything.

Turns out he had his authentic headdress in the trunk from a recent powow. As customary, it had real eagle feathers on it. These were collected from birds which were already dead, but it doesn't matter: they're completely illegal, and carry a multi-thousand-dollar fine per feather. City cops wouldn't know or care what they were looking at, but the state troopers around the rural areas where the powows are held usually do.

I think Native Americans are granted certain exceptions for religious purposes though

"Run Forest, Run!!!"

Shawnee123  Thursday May 15 05:03 PM

"I know what trees are, Jennny."

xoxoxoBruce  Thursday May 15 05:48 PM

Well, what's the likely-hood of meeting him in a dark alley? The city denizens would pluck him like a turkey.

And yet when I saw your post, my instinctive reaction was, "Run, Ethel... run..."
10 points and a lollipop for the quote.

Shawnee123  Thursday May 15 06:29 PM

The Streak? Oh, that's "Don't look, Ethel!"

footfootfoot  Thursday May 15 06:30 PM

How'd you like to meet this guy in a moonlit forest?

As long as I was wearing my brown pants...

What if you're just a plain ol' white guy with a strong cultural interest?

Tree Fae  Thursday May 15 08:30 PM

That outfit would be considered quite over dressed for Beltane. Less is the key word for the day. After all its the festival of fertility, gotta love it.

You still have to get your Peyote illegally.

SPUCK  Friday May 16 05:40 AM

What's that in his right hand(left from our view)? Looks like a coin dispenser.

Gravdigr  Saturday May 17 04:36 PM

Oooh, a lollipop! I kick ass!!!!

I think it's a rattle. I can't find an image that matches, but I think I have seen them shaped like that.

Being of Cherokee decent I thought putting a plains indian in a forest was odd. He would be just as intimidating knocking on one's door . Indians are not a part of my nightmares. I've been to many pow wows and seen many costums so sue me. :P I didn't get the forest connection.

Tree Fae  Sunday Jun 8 11:55 AM

At least a few that I know of. With me the name is kinda a give away lol. I follow a Faery Path.

I thought it was more apropos than, a dark alley.

I apologize to Oneshotww for using his/her picture. I figured once it was up on Wunderground, he/she wanted as many people as possible to see it. My bad.

I see it's been removed from wunderground also, but if you follow the link in the first post, you can see the rest of Oneshotww's pictures from that powwow. While they are not as spectacular as the removed one, they're very good.
