June 27, 2013 - Corona Mass Ejection

NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory

(Kind of reminds me of a scene from This Is the End.)

A few days ago, I saw an image of the aftermath of that CME.
There was actually a "hole" created in the surface of the sun
where temperatures are lower than surrounding areas.

I have not yet found the link to that news article,
but in the Gallery of CM's link there is an pic below
close to what I remember. The blue areas are cooler "hole"

If all goes well (no rogue huge asteroid smashes us to bits), a CME will be hitting what's left of the earth, as the sun begins to change into a red giant, followed by it morphing into a dwarf star, by a huge compression.

When the world ends, it's by fire, barring cosmic wandering disasters.

The diameter of that loop is probably ten or twenty times that of the Earth. The sun is a mighty beast.
